Water under sound insulation/carpet 04 X3

Hi,

I have read and searched this forum and other forums hoping to find an answer.

My 04 BMW X3 2,5IA is soaked in water under the sound insulation (under the carpet). I have no sunroof, and the carpet is not wet.

I have checked the rubber seals, the drainage in doors, in the engine room etc, etc.

It´s pure (old) water smell so there are no washer fluid leak.

I am now drying the interior, but I have to find where the water is coming from.

Check the cabin air filter housing if you haven't already. Leaves in there have also been known to cause water leaks.

I have cleaned out the drains and looked into the filter box. It was ok.

One of the vapor barriers under the door panels is most likely the culprit. Wait till it rains and you will see it leaking in. Common issue and you just need to pull the door panel and apply new bead sealant to the barrier. Have any the door been worked on in the past? If so that is probably the one leaking. You can also have someone spray the car with a hose and look for the leak.

By the way a couple of big electric fans blowing into the car will dry it out pretty fast. I've done that many times at the dealership. Overnight should get most of it dried out.

my money is on a vapro barrier, I need to replace one of mine soon also.

I have ordered new vapor barriers to day. I think the problem is the back door, but have ordered for both doors. The car is now dry after many hours with electric fan. I have also cleaned the carpet and sound insulation with my Foma Mimo.

You normally don't need new barriers only the sealant that holds them to the door. The new barriers don't even come with the sealant. You can get it at the auto parts store its made by 3M.

+1 and what others are saying... vapor barrier... just go to the dealer parts section and ask for the butyl tape, get enough to go around your doors and replace all existing one... in my case, i just added the new stuff to the old one. good luck

After drying the insulation last weekend, I have gotten new vapor barrier and bought a black silicon/glue seal. To day I checked for new leak after a week with various weather. As I assumed, a new leak was found. The insulation in the rear footwell was wet, but the front footwell was still dry. Ergo the leak is most likely coming from the rear passenger door

The car is now drying once again. Tomorrow new vapor barriers will be mounted with fresh new seal. Lets hope that this will fix the problem.

To challange you a little bit more:
If the problem isn't the vapor barriers? What could be the cause of the water leak?

That is usually the leak. I would go no further until you confirm it. Make it rain yourself with a hose.

With temperature below zero it´s a little bit problematic to "make rain" :-)

Sorry I did not know it was that cold there already. You have to wait until it warms up a bit or find a garage.
