Winter tire / wheel size

My X1 (M-Sport) will have the 18" wheels when it arrives. For most of my previous cars I've bought a second set a wheels and had snow tires on them. Does anyone know what the smallest diameter wheel size will fit on an X1 and what the recommended snow tires size is?

I would think that the original "standard size" wheel and tire would be ok:
Wheels - 17x7.5
Tire dimensions - 225/50x17

So 16" wheels won't fit?

I don't think so. Tirerack also recommends 17s with 225/50 (or 55)-17 tires.
