Why X1 ?
Hello All,
I have following requirements : 1: I want to buy BMW 2: My budget is under 40k USD. 3: I have no preference of new car over old one. I am open for new as well as old cars. With these 3 restrictions, I am thinking of ordering X1. (You can suggest me other options as well.) I need to know answers of couple of questions: 1: Why I should go for X1 ? (I dont have specific interest in Crossover or SUV) I liked X1 interiors and exteriors hence was thinking of buying it. 2: Why I should prefer X1 over old 328i sedan ? 3: Why I should prefer X1 over new 328i sendan ? (excluding cost factor) 4: Is it worth buying X1 right now as I heard in 2015 new model of X1 is coming up ? Will it impact on resell value of this model ? I appreciate your time. Thanks, Garry |

Question 1: If you like the X1 buy it. Question 2&3: If you want more cargo space or AWD then the X1 should be your choice over any old or new 328i. Question 4: If you need a new car now then buy it. |

Best reason for the late model 328i is simply the depreciation has already been taken into account. So test drive both and subject both to the same road and driving conditions. Factor out the obvious differences, i.e. cargo capacity and the SUV "feel". Both have similar luxury features. What about Gas mileage? Acceleration? Fun factor? Visual appeal? Which one screams out at you and forces you to say "I'VE GOT TO HAVE THIS VEHICLE, NOW!!!"
What does your gut tell you? Have fun! Vince. |

Thanks for your reply.
The fact is that, New X1 is awesome in looks (Interior and exterior as well). But I did not like its handling. I mean It has not acceleration if you compare that against old 328i. Also Handling and turning over road did not impress me much. But on the other side, Old 328i has very average looks as compared to its competitors (Interior and exterior as well.) Also in 30k+tax USD, I can get basic 328i model (With no Nav and no premium sound and no backup camera). I am getting all those features in X1 with cost which is under my budget. But again if I am paying for BMW, handling and feel has to be good otherwise no point in wasting so much money in X1. Thats what I feel. Thanks, Garry. |

Sounds like you answered your own questions. Sounds like you value handling and feel over the extra room the X1 provides. It's a personal decision. I chose the X1 because I wanted the extra room and I preferred the X1 handeling to the other X models. |

Personally, I would suggest you choose the type of vehicle first. Do you want a car, or an SUV. Then shop all the brands, test drive a bunch. If you decide an SUV style vehicle is more to your liking, the X1 will probably end up near the top of your list!! I knew I wanted a crossover/compact SUV of some sort. Researched all vehicles, and test drove a few. The X1 was the best by far. So, now I'm just waiting until Spring to pull the trigger. (Budget won't let me buy now) ![]() good luck! |

I would go for a 3series touring either e91 335i or f31 328i
Better built than x1

I'm pretty impressed with the X1 build quality, the bugs have been worked out in Europe already and its overall a pretty tight little crossover. I would have chosen a 328/335 but the wife just cant get over the SUV thing and it worked out pretty well cost-wise.

Since you have no preference with regards to a new or used car, I would look at some CPO models also. Drive as many as you can so you can start to get a feel for what you like. $40k buys you a nice car in the CPO world.

Thanks all for your responses. I appreciate your help.
Looks like I am utterly confused now .I simply dont like old 328i interiors and exteriors. They are very poor as compared to other cars out in market (G37, Acura TL, TSX, Audi A4, Merc c250). Very few old 328i model has harmon cardon sound package , technology package etc. But as I want to buy BMW , looks like thats the only car fits in my budget. Thanks once again. |

X1 has been here since 2010 and 2012 it has a refreshed
2 years for a refresh in very unusual for BMW The reason they have to refresh urgently is: - Crap interior - Under power (vs Q5) - Not very pretty externally - Poorly built (many complained about rattles) 3 series wagon is better built and better interior lay-out and design Better looking too

As to build quality - X1's are built in factories all over the world- Germany, Russia, India, China, Thailand, Mexico, etc. I don't know where the australian X1's are built, but the US bound ones are built in the Fatherland. |

X1s for Europe and US are built in Graz Austria where the old X3 was built.

Where did you get this? I asked when I was at the dealership. The salesman read out the VIN and told me it was built in Leipzig, Germany.

Only 3 plants build X1 to best of my knowledge...Leipzig, Germany, Chennai, India, and Shenyang, China.
However, link from BMW indicates where models are built http://www.bmwgroup.com/e/nav/index....orte/graz.html Last edited by HBWT; 11-28-2012 at 08:29 AM. Reason: edit |
