I agree with you. I have owned three 335i Xdrives, including my present 2013, but for the X1, I have chosen a 2014 Xdrive 28i for a May ED. I have test driven both the 28 & 35 X1s and am totally confident the the 28i will have adequate power. I live in Vermont where we have many two lane roads, and what is critical for me is passing acceleration. The X1 may have to downshift a little more often, but it has plenty of power.

I could care less to take a 328i out for a drive, or that the 35i has more torque (which is a given). I'm talking specifically about the X1 28i with the N20 having lots of headroom as far as the engine is concerned. For what it is - an SUV - it's an extremely capable ride, that doesn't leave me wanting. IMO, it's certainly not "working too hard", especially with the 8spd tranny working things out perfectly.
A conservative BMS piggyback and you're at 5 seconds to 60mph, so that should speak for itself.
