How common are engine problems with 08 535i engine?

Debating between 08 528i and 535i---Would love the twin turbo and 300hp but just how common are problems with the engine? I have heard quite a bit regarding them and might go with 528i to avoid potential issues

My own experience: a non-issue since the recall work with updated software, latest HPFP, and replacement of bad injectors. One real problem is carbon build up on valves, which is a common issue with direct injected engines from all makers.

I think it is hit or miss. My car has had a ton of problems not all of which were related to the N54 engine. Based on the number of repairs I have had between 50,000 and 57,000 miles (water pump, low pressure fuel sensor, DTML pump, fuel lines, fuel rail, fuel injectors and a valve seal) and the over 4 weeks it took to diagnose and fix these problems, I am not sure if BMWs in general are not that reliable outside of 50,000 miles. By comparison, my wife has a similar vintage Mercedes E-class that while not having been trouble free never had a repair thus far that required it to stay in the shop for a week.

+1
Just had our e61 wagon walnut blasted. It has 82k miles and it had never been done. Very noticable difference in performance afterwards. i think this is recommended every 40k miles, so we were badly overdue. Anyway the car has never run better.

FYI. if you get a 535, have the dealer run the VIN to see if your car has the added 10 year 100k warranty for HPFP and injectors.

great to know right there, thanks---I'm open to either trim as I'm mainly just looking for my color preference (Alpine white) as well as under 50k miles but Im starting to lean towards the 528 as I have heard quite a bit regarding these 535 engines

If reliability/longevity trumps all other considerations, then by all means buy the 528. However if you value performance as well, do yourself a favor and test drive a 535 to be sure you are OK with what you will be missing every day you own a 528.

For me it was a no brainer and my 535 has proven quite reliable.

So true. I have a JB+ which makes a very good engine even better! And then there is the JB4... a future upgrade for me late next year when my CPO warranty expires.
