Help coolant troubles :(

So I have been having some issues with my 2004 BMW X3 and the reoccurring issues seems to be coolant troubles.

Today driving my car as I was parking the hood started to steam a bit the heater gauge stayed in the middle so I wasn't super concerned until I was driving back then the heater gauge dropped down all the way to the red :S

I managed to get it home however when I popped the trunk this is what I found. Has anyone had this issue and will this be a super expensive fix?

HELP!!!

Looks like it could be an easy temporary fix. The upper radiator hose should be reconnected and then add coolant and bleed the system to purge any air.
If your expansion tank is cracked its more involved but still an easy DIY.
