I know a lot of the e39 guys do the lsx swap. They actually use the 6 cylinder cars because they say it's easier to make the steering work. However they aren't very many e34 lsx swaps,though I'd like to see one. Here's a bf.c member that had built a turbo 525i (sold for like 17k) and is now building a lsx e39 touring.

I agree. Every thing works on my 93 BMW and its still fast and powerful. I think overhauling cooling system is key to longevity of the M50.

Yeah I started thinking about it. The ppl who are selling the bad m50 seem to not understand the importance of preventive care. Plus they aren't the richest people.

Thats because a 20 year old BMW is in everyones price range to buy, but still only in the riches to run.

I disagree Andy, owning a car in general is expensive. Tho older the cheaper in my opinion. I mean maintaince is maintaince, it really don't change much across the board. The older and less advanced, the better(less to fix) look at the 34 to 39 have you guys seen how plagued there forum is than ours? Lol my point being, I don't trust buying a car from anyone. Maintaince is never kept up with regardless of vehicle.

You wanna know rich to maintaine, a big American diesel truck lol. My buddy has numerous powerstrokes, I'll tell you now the maintaince on those is just scary. 13qt oil systems? Yeah experience, even with extended frequencies.

I disagree with you. For example, i had to buy a set of leads for my Ford Econovan, which cost me $42 for a set of four. for my E30 316i i brought a set only 3 weeks earlier and they were $170, and neither were purchased from a dealership, they were from the exact same parts store. Parts on a BMW are more expencive in 90% of cases because of the fact both the dealership have a large profit margin, and because there are less 525i on the road to an equivalent year Corolla or whatever, so there are less aftermarket options too. Yes you have to do maintenance regardless, but i could overhaul a cooling system on a Corolla incl labour at a shop for cheaper than parts alone on a 525i. Owning a BMW will never be the cheapest option for maintenance, they are a luxury vehicle

I guess, I always get parts from germanautoparts.com which is cheaper than any parts store here. It literally levels the playing field. Your right maintaince will be more. But what you get out of it for keeping a BMW maintained is worth it.

My first M50 car (92 E34) had 256K when reverse went out on the trans. No HG problems. My second M50 car (95 E36) had 241K when I sold it. Again, no HG problems. My current M50 car (E34 obviously) has 165K with no HG problems. I truly believe that the key to helping prevent any HG problems is proper, timely maintenance of the cooling system. ~ $600 in parts every 100K miles is great insurance against HG failure ... IMHO.

I did one on my own Volvo way back in H.S.

I find that if you can do the work yourself you can maintain a nice BMW for less than the guy in the Honda who is paying a mechanic. Most people think my old BMW is worth thousands more than I paid for it. The driving expereince is worlds better than average type cheap and relaible cars. So, if you want to play, you have to pay. It is worth it for me, I enjoy the work and buy my parts from an in-state internet vendor, RMeuropean. The prices are pretty reasonable.

If you have to pay a mechanic parts and labor, this is a very expensive car to properly maintain. I would just take monthly payments and a warranty over a 20 yr old BMW if that was the case.

Yeah it's mainly people who don't understand exactly how much maintenance costs. See Andy most of these people don't know the difference between a wrench and a jack hammer.

Most people on the forums regularly do their own maintenance. At $80 an hour it adds up.-

Maintenance isn't a cost on a new car because new bmws have maintenance free. But a new car is worth 1/2 it's msrp after 3 years. My dad has a CPO e60 maintenance plan to 100,000 miles since then nothing has broken knock on wood just normal maintenance (oil,wheel bearings, tires) He's at 157,000 and he claims that he's going to drive it to 300,000 miles

Agreed. I feel like a million dollars in my e39 540i, while my friends drive 07 Nissan sentra. They are so gross felt interior, plastic everything.

That's what I like about the older 5 series they are metal. I like a nice heavy door. People complain about the doors being heavy but it makes me feel safe. My friend killed 2 of his good friends in a Honda civic sport 2012. They were wearing seat buckles the car is just plastic. He was also drunk and I feel bad because he is such a nice kid but he's in PA prison for 4-8 yrs truly a said story. Not saying driving fast is a OK to do but BMWs are very safe and that's one of the main reasons my dad didn't sell his and gave it to me instead. I crashed it 525iA with 250k miles. Hydroplaned into a telephone pole, Airbags went off. I was probably doing 45 mph I lost control then boom literally the sound of a gun shot. I got out walking completely fine. Only thing was the seat buckle left a huge bruise. Insurance paid for my 01 540i 6 speed 100k miles. which was awesome trade off because the 525iA was crappy seats were all ripped.

I usually get from a specialist BMW store, but sadly none are based in Wellington, so its a 24-48 hour wait on parts, no good when you have time pressures. But the specialist stores are still only round 10-15% cheaper than the normal stores anyways

When im working on my mates BMWs i just pass on the cost of parts and tell them to pay me what they think I am worth to them. I dont work on some of thier cars now, $30 is not appropriate for 4 hours work on their car, but thats all they can afford because parts are so much more expencive than their old Corolla or Civic. They would be in serious trouble if they didn't have me

If he is anywhere near 'someones yard' and 'trees', im sorry he deserves anything he gets if he was going 110 mph. Also, your E39 is going to fare no better at those speeds

I have never made a poor decision in a car, and have never crashed as a result of a poor decisoins made by me. I have been driving performance cars for 5 years now. Speed is for the track, not the road.

Im assuming residential areas have speed limits of 30mph where you are, 110mph is almost 4 times the speed limit. That isnt a poor decision, your friend is a total wanker.

Please think through before correlating things in future. If you dont use your head, you might end up thinking that a 100mph crash in a bmw is something you can walk away from.

My age is irrelevant, but i am 20. I drive a highly modified V12 BMW, of course i have floored it. But im not stupid enough to corner at well over twice the speed limit and expect to walk away. And im not trying to have a pissing contest, but I have around $2.5k invested in my suspension alone, and over half that again in my tyres and another half in brakes... Physics doesn't go away just because you are trying to show off. twice the speed is four times the damage. Thats why i take my car to the track, and keep up with M3s there. If in the case i do **** it up and smash into a wall, there is an ambulance less than 500m away

But someone asked how irrelevant the story was because he crashed going 110 and any car would not protect you then.

He crashed the same way I crashed going 45 mph. I know every situation is different but it was eerily similar which really scared me. I drive a 540i6 now instead of the 525iA crashed. Way more power. I love the power and acceleration. I'm not going to lie. I don't go the speed limit I go about 20-25 kph over it. My cluster is in kph. I have done stuff I'm not proud of in my 540i6 and I won't do it again

I have been so lucky in lifes trials that now every day i set goals to drive at the speed limit .
