It looks like part #5 here:
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...57&hg=11&fg=15 The hose goes up under the intake manifold. I tried to look at mine to tell exactly where it goes, but I couldn't see where it terminates. Maybe someone here who has removed the manifold or replaced the hose before can give you more information.

Yeah that's your valve cover breather hose. There's two on that little plastic bit that clips on, a smaller one that goes under the bigger one. I replaced them without removing the intake manifold. Just nutted up and shoved my hand in there and followed it. Put a dab of Vaseline on the end so it'd slide on easier.

Thanks a lot guys! So the smaller tube, where exactly does it connect to? And, if you wouldn't mind helping out a new learner, what is the function of the tube? I don't think I fully understand the purpose of the valve cover breather, from what research I've done. It is to release air pressure, right? So why is oil coming out? And lastly, I've seen small filters on the breather, why should the air be filtered, or is the air recycled? Thanks for the patience and thanks again for the help guys!

And so I guess some engines release this air into the air (lol) and some recycle it back into the air intake (like mein auto, right?). So I still don't understand why some have a filter on it, if it's not going into the intake?

Don't use Vaseline. Use rubber or silicone grease.
