Sliding/tilt sunroof fault

Has anyone seen this on a e9x? What's bizarre is that I was programming the homelink/garage opener when this came on and I had not touched the sunroof in a week or so.

The full error message is:

"Anti-trap function deactivated. Have the system checked by the nearest BMW center."

The sunroof won't open but it will do the tilt/vent.

try to reinitialize it by opening it fully (hold the switch in the back position if its not doing the one touch) then holding the switch in the forward position to close. hold the switch forward untill the sunroof pops down slightly, then back up.

DO NOT USE YOUR SUNROOF!
If it's closed, keep it closed and DO NOT touch it. I can't stress that enough. This is another pretty common thing. Just take it in to your dealer and have the fault fixed. It could just be a very simple software thing, and F-ing with it could complicate the problem.

I just got this message as well. I guess it's the first "issue" with the new car. A little over 2 months old.

My SA told me to do the reinitialize procedure. Press the center of the sunroof button and hold it for up to a minute until it goes through all the motions and that fixed it. I had tried the procedure listed on this site but I don't think I help the button long enough. Also make sure the car is running.

I just got the same error after getting the oil changed by my dealer. It was an after hours pickup and so I couldn't ask them about it. Fortunately the reinitializing procedure worked perfectly. Any ideas about the cause?

This "reinitialize" routine worked for me - while moving my hard wired radar detector from my '06 330i to my '08 335i, I considered wiring it into the power in the sunroof area and ran into this fault when checking for voltages on the wires.

The re-init sequence cleared the fault, thanks a ton for the web guys!

I got the same message on Thursday. I took it to my local dealer and they could not fix it on the spot. I will try the reset proceedure.

If your sunroof is not working, just as the others said, push the center of the sunroof button and hold it for a minute. At that point, the sunroof will reset, and the problem should be fixed.

I can't thank you guys enough. This thread and forum as a whole has made owning a BMW much easier. The sunroof trick worked for me as well. I just read it 5 minutes ago, tried it for 1 minute and it cleared the code and the sunroof works fine now. Appreciate the help. Thank you!!

Just got the car and the error on the sunroof started two days later. My salesman had no idea and wanted to schedule a service date way into the future. Checked the site, held the button for a minute and all is well. Thanks everyone!

Props for the instructions. Dealer replaced the instrument cluster but the anti-trapping fault developed. Followed procedure above and cleared fault.

Code came on earlier today, sunroof wouldn't work right or close properly.
A search got me to here and--- the problem is now resolved.

I did the hold for a minute thing...

It worked and the sunroof is working fine, but I still get the error notice. Please help?

I've tried the calibration process multiple times on my 2005 545i. All the sunroof will do is go through the venting motions and eventually stops just above flush with the roof line. The error code is still in iDrive and the sunroof will not retract or close the vent with one touch. Is there anything else to try before taking it to the dealership? I have one BMW dealership in my city and they charge a minimum of $115 to diagnose the vehicle. Any and all help would be much appreciated, thanks.

Thank you guys! I got the sunroof error this morning and I live an hour away from the closest dealership. I have an appointment scheduled next week for another reason but with all the rain we've been getting I was concerned. Google led me to this post and I pressed and held the middle button with the car running. In about 15 seconds the sunroof did its initialization test and soon after (total 30 seconds), the error disappeared on the OBD.

this morning woke up and saw sun roof was left opened!
shocked because clearly i left it close the night before.
start the engine and the sun roof error came on.
search bimmerfeast and found the answer.
press the center switch for 15 seconds and
the sun roof did its automatic reset.
now the error on the computer is gone.
things are back to normal.

I just had my battery replaced and this error appeared on the dash, I don't have iDrive. I landed on this excellent thread. I pushed the the button upwards and within 30 seconds it started to go through the motions. Needless to say all is well and fixed!

The whole sunroof cartridge was changed on my car. Once you get something "software" related, get worried.

I have the same problem as OP. it won't go through o complete the initialization. It tilts up/down but that's it. Neither the liner nor the window will move back.
Any ideas?
