2010 X5 35D -- Drive belt pulley bolt recall?
I got a letter about a recall on my 35D last week. Campaign 2012-396.
Something about the drive belt idler pulley bolt loosening. Did anybody else get this? I wonder how urgent it is as I was hoping to avoid swinging by my dealership until my next service (likely in the spring). |

The problem with the bolt happens more in very cold weather. All of the initial reports were from Canada. Since you live there you should probably get it done soon. I live in San Diego so I will get it done before I go on a ski trip.

Everyone got it.
Worse thing that happens is you need to get towed in....

Got it done last week. Took like 3-4 hours total.

I didn't receive any notice yet, but I had mine done when I took it in for an oil change mid-december.
Mine also had a software update they had to install. Jay

Yeah, there is some software update. I didn't have time to get it done last week because it was supposed to take a couple hours. Going back wednesday to do it.

You guys going to just let them update SW?
They said there was an update, I asked what it did- they could say, so I declined it. The SW is not a recall. AFAIK A

I asked, service tech said it was for the pump between the secondary DEF resevoir and the active tank, said it wasn't reading levels properly and wouldn't fill the active tank in some circumstances.
It seemed like a detailed enough explanation that I didn't ask for anything in writing to confirm. They also agreed to program my trailer hitch that I added a couple months ago at home, so I took the opportunity ![]() Jay

Sounds like an important fix, if that's really what the SW upgrade is about. I also did not get the SW upgrade when I took my car for the recall (they didn't have the software)... Does the explanation above sound right to the gurus here?

Mine was in 2 weeks ago for service. I got the alternator pulley recall done, but got the same story on the SW update. They didn't have it yet.

I never received the notice but I just had both the idler pulley bolt and a the software recall performed on January 31st. My understanding was they downloaded the software so I am not sure why they would say they do not have it. I assume when thy stated it needed to be downloaded it was retrieved from a BMW server and not a disk or flash drive they has on site. When I asked what the software update entailed I basically got some hand waving but not a specific list of items the software patch addressed.
Anyone know what know issues were addressed? |

I never got a letter on the alternator pulley bolt but DID have the dealership do the work under warranty back in December. I don't think there was any software update available at the time because the issue of updating it never came up. Is this SW also a recall? Is it a new one that may explain why most of us are unaware of it?

FYI- A 'campaign' is not the same as a 'recall'
A recall is issued when a MFG must proactively notify owners of a safety defect. Manufactures are allowed to perform 'field corrective actions' (lot of names) to fix issues, as long as the underlying failure will not result in an unsafe car.

Got mine done before Xmas and was told about it from Service Rep. Bolt could come loose and loss of power steering would occur. Took about an hour and mechanic said bolt was loose. Interssting BMW was not planning to notify owners till Jan 2013.

I got my notification in December. My local dealer won't start the recall repair until February. So I am waiting until Feb. 1st. I am not worried. Northern California does not get that cold.

You still need to do the recall. But yes, WHERE you 'get towed in from' can be a PITA....

I had it done yesterday. I left the car at the shop for the day but they claimed it was done by noon.
Thanks all for your advice. |

Oh but yes it was the idler pulley bolt, no alternator, no power steering. The pulley was lucky found on the underbody panel, half of the bolt in the bolt hole and the other half maybe somewhere on the streets of san francisco. It was towed from BMW of san francisco to about 150 miles south somewhere in the central valley where I picked it up too drive it back home to so-cal. This happen over a year ago before the crack EGR cooler problem. Oh the joys of ownership but at least they are fun too drive.
