Antifreeze?

Okay so I wrecked my car at the beginning of October and I've been slowly fixing it. I have to put a new fan shroud in. So that means disconnecting the hose that goes in the bottom of the reservoir. Which will make me loose some antifreeze blah blah blah. I'm also going to seal up the thermostat housing as well. But what I want to know is...is it absolutely imperative that I use BMW coolant or could I possibly use some cheaper and more readily accessible?

You'll get a divergence of opinions on this one. Personally I run the BMW coolant because it's not really more expensive. It's about $20 a gallon UNDILUTED so with another $1 or so for a gallon of distilled water you've got 2 gallons at $11 a gallon.
When I unscientifically compare the BMW coolant to Zerox or Prestone it feels like it has more lubricant in it to my untrained fingers and given the historical weakness of the E36 cooling system I'm looking for every advantage I can get.
If you don't have easy access to a BMW dealer to buy it and have to pay shipping costs that certainly brings another factor into the equation.

Zerex or any G-05 or G-06 rated coolant will do fine. As will Mercedes or of course the BMW coolant.

The reason that these are specified is because they are not corrosive to aluminum. Every pre-mixed coolant I've ever seen is corrosive to aluminum. (Prestone et al.)

I am not sure about O'reillys or Autozone, but Napa has it...about $16 per gallon undiluted
