totally locked? or do you have access to the passenger compartment?
if its totally locked, you'll need to call bmw assist or AAA for them to come out and unlock the door. |

Go to the dealer and obtain another key. Then use it to unlock the car.

Totally Locked out. Yes I know I may have to obtain another key but when I called BMW assist last night the woman told me the car needed to be towed at a BMW dealership in order to get another key

they can order the key without the car, but it will take a few days to come in. you can unlock the car with the new key (the metal key that will come with the new key) and then use your old key to drive the car to dealer to have the new one programmed.

How about using the bmw remote iPhone app? You can unlock the car with that.

He'd have to get a new BMW first. And, I don't know, an iPhone.

That's not correct. All you need is an ID and the registration or other proof of ownership.

The new key will come from BMW ready to operate the vehicle without further programming. The only programming that may be necessary is for the key-less locking and unlocking.

Haha. I was thinking he coulda borrowed an iPhone for a couple of minutes. Didn't realise it wouldn't work on his year though.

if he had bmw assist they could open the car remotely, no need for the app (you need bmw assist and an active service agreement to do either)

True that. Can the door be slim-jimmed? I thought I read an article somewhere that claimed the E9X cars were resistant to being slim-jimmed?

I am just playing devil's advocate, no offense intended to anyone. It really sucks to lock your keys in the car. It happened to me just once a very long time ago, and to this day, I still remember how much I hated the experience. The moment Comfort Access (or functionality similar to it in my non-BMW cars) became an option, it was a must-have option for me.

i would suggest window if he/she was really desperate, but thats 450 bucks to replace. i think they typically wedge open the door to reach the door handle or lock button. that might get dicey as the coupe has a frameless window and i can see the glass shattering if they try to wedge it. i locked the keys to my 07 in the back seat while out of state. i remembered as i was slamming the door and caught it-- just enough to keep it from fully locking. i had to insert some wedges, fish the keys up to the arm rest, then push the unlock button with a probe. i was ready to smash a rear quarter glass-- otherwise i was in for a two way acela trip back to nyc and back.

it just depends on how urgently the OP needs to get access to the car. my choice, if i was sure the trunk had the emergency release handle, or that the keys were within arms reach of the tail light would be to smash a tail light and reach in, either to grab the keys or pull the handle. i just looked it up, the light is $146 (this will also depend on the op's arm size and access to appropriate smashing tools )
