ATTN Keith-SealBeach

I want to do the Accelerator pedal upgrade. What do I need?
I already have the Pedal / black box with module..
I still need the adapter plate which the pedal mounts onto the carpet.
Do i have to buy a special cable harness?' In order to fit into the module?
Later Ill do the Sprint booster but for right now just the upgrade
thnx in advance

Hey Fabian,

I haven't tried to put a "black box" accelerator on my 2000 740i (which came without the black box under the gas pedal, like yours, I assume).
You may have things a little confused with my install of the Sprint Booster because I did an install for both my 2000 740i & my 2003 540i, which did come with the black box under the gas pedal.

Back to your 7. If your true goal is to add the Sprint Booster, I can help you with that, including the add on cable that I built to allow the Sprint Booster to work on my 7.

But, for your original question, I haven't replaced a non-black box under the gas pedal setup for a black box under the gas pedal setup.

If this question was directed to me, I don't know the answer to that.
My GUESS would depend on whether your 97 has drive by wire or not.
I don't believe a Sprint Booster will work without a drive by wire setup, but I'm honestly not 100% sure about that. I know my 2000 7 is drive by wire.

Done.

If anybody knows & replies, I'll ask about the coding, and if it's required.

However, I'm not sure if we'll get a response since I can't think of an advantage of doing the conversion, nor do I recall anybody posting about having done it.

Reason I'm doing it is I'm changing the carpet from black to blue. The pedal is impossible to remove. I followed the instructions on bb
I tried for two hours. Only was is to break the SOb. So in my hand is a 2001 pedal. Or may just buy a new pedal if I cannot do the mod

Fabian - are you having trouble removing the bottom of the pedal from the floor?

I used the Mark Wong method - and some PB Blaster to make it a little easier to slide off:
http://www.bimmerboard.com/forums/posts/72891

It wasn't easy, but it did work for me.

Yes but u have the pedal with the black box
Yes o. That pedal u push in with oem flathead and slide the pedal
Not on mine. I have old style pedal and there's a latch site behind the lower part of pedal. Almost impossible to release but I was able to do it. Second stage is to pinch two tabs. But that's where I failed. It's impossible

The pedal on my 2000 7 doesn't have the black box, only my 2003 540 has the black box.
I took the gas pedal off my 7 years ago to add an aluminum cover. Exactly as it's shown in Mark's DIY post.

All I can add is you need leverage to get the bottom of the gas pedal unhooked from that metal holder that's attached to the floor. I ended up having one hand hold down 2 flat blade screwdrivers to lift up/push in the 2 tabs (after the backside tab had been released & pushed to the floor behind the gas pedal) & a leverage bar put under the heel of the gas pedal (wedged under) to push the bar towards the floor as I pushed on the 2 screwdrivers. It's plenty snug.

So does that mean it's possible?
If I read it right unplug module cuz the 2001 pedal has the module built in

That's how I read it.
But, you'd need some sort of cable/harness to go from the black box underneath the pedal up to the input for the potentiometer connector under the dash (above the gas pedal).

Even then, I personally have no clue if that's all there is to it. If you bypass the 2000 potentiometer up under the dash & use the potentiometer under the gas pedal from the 2001, is there any other changes/mods that have to be done for it to work, including coding?

I can say that the Sprint Booster works for the potentiometer under the dash in the 2000, as it does for the potentiometer under the gas pedal in my 2003 540, so there's a good chance all you'd need to do is connect the input to the potentiometer of your 7 to the potentiometer under the pedal of your 2001 gas pedal assembly. Could be as simple as that.

I believe it could work because the box does contain the potentiometer for the DBW - where earlier the pot was up above. This should just require a rewiring or the jumper/adapter cable to complete the job.

Maybe like TXDarth mentioned - maybe check out realoem.com for a 2001 740 wiring harness going from the black box under the gas pedal to the connector under the dash.
It probably has the connector that matches to the input connector for the potentiometer in your 2000 740.

PS - be sure to read Milan's post that he linked to in the link I provided from BmrBrd.
In his link, he shows how he added a 2001 pedal with black box to his 2000 740iL. So, it truly can be done, and made to work.

Sure sounds like the input to the potentiometer up under your dash in your 7 basically needs to run down to the black box on your replacement gas pedal.

Of course, you'll have to remove whatever connection there currently is from your 2000 gas pedal (an arm) & whatever that arm connects to.
You're bypassing the potentiometer under your dash for the one that will now be under your replacement gas pedal.

Your original gas pedal had to communicate to your original potentiometer - that has to be removed. I think it's a physical (that arm) connection.
Pretty much exactly like Milan posted in his thread that's doing exactly like what you want to accomplish, except he added his SB at the same time.

I've never removed the left foot rest/dead pedal on my 7.
I did on my 540, which should be similar (I ASSUME).
Here's a link on what to do, step 2. Too bad the pictures are missing, it would have made it a bit easier, but with all the work you've done on your 7, you should have no trouble.
I do remember on my 540 that getting that dead pedal out did require quite a bit effort. It's a pretty snug fit. At least on the 540, you do have to pull straight back towards the rear of the car, not sideways.
Here's a small tip - make sure your carpet right around the dead pedal is free of small, sharp pebbles. I didn't & I had some nice scrapes on my fingers to prove it!

Ok So i went to the junk yard and PRACTICED on some lonely 7`s
Dead Pedal- Found on all E38s 95-2000- removes easily- Just Screws off
When u remove the dead pedal it reveals the 10mm thread to bolt on the MOUNT that the Black Box/potentiometer Slides into

Now for the Harness

Harness from 95-2000 runs from Left fire wall to potentiometer to Lever to Accelerator.

I removed potentiometer/ black box accelerator from a 2003 540i
The harness from the black box runs up and to a fat wire loom under the dashboard..I cut all the way till it meets the wireloom
I dont see the color wire matching the 95-2000 wire harness

Wish Spaghetti was still up?

Here are some pics I took to remove the 95-2000 Accelerator Pedal..My 7 was not used in this abuse, lol
You can see the Flat accelerator pedal(plastic) removed with BASE only.
The Base has a LEVER which you Flip towards the firewall.
Insert a Hook like Flathead and pull tab Outwards towards the rear of car..This Unlocks from the last picture, the Floor Metal MOUNT

The 2001-03 E38 and E39 still has the Metal Mount and removal is the same with the Black BOX Plastic Mount

Well it IS DOABLE...only hard part is wiring..
Found this guy on E39 Forums for WAGONS
Here is his quote on his major overhaul

Quote:
Also i converted the "Old style" pedal to a new style 7/3 series gas pedal. The potentiometer is built into the pedal assembly and required some wiring fun.
