What do I need to make the gear selector work

When I shift into any gear the selector on doesn't highlight. What is that part called and where is it located???

Either Selector lever position switch/neutral safety switch or Transmission Position Switch is what you should be researching. The latter is known to get wet and prevent the car from starting.

PJ - is it just the light that indicates which gear you're in that isn't lighting up (but the car starts & shifts OK), or is the gear selection not working at all?

Also, (not so much for this question) it would help if we knew what year & type of e38 you have.

Hey Seal Beach, it's an 01 e38. And the the car starts and runs fine. But on the cluster there's no way to tell what gear I'm in.

And more specifically...740i.

PJ, you need to update your "Mein Auto", not everyone can remember what you have and your screenname was from when you were looking at the other car.

My vote (guess) would be it's one of those tiny light bulbs that screw into the back of the cluster haS burned out. But, to be honest, that doesn't happen very often.

It's not very difficult to remove the cluster (2 screws up under the top of the cluster, if I remember correctly). Maybe remove it & swap 1 bulb for another & see if you get your gear selection indication back (& lose light where you swapped the bulb from).

Those bulbs are pretty small & cheap. Well, cheap considering the cost of most BMW parts!

I thought the gear number is only displayed on the dash when the box is in manual mode?

Sorry for being so late. 740i was the model I was referring to. I thought the only diff between the i and il was the length.
U-Nam, is mein auto on the forum or the car??

Non sport but I'm looking for the 3.15 diff. That'll fix that!

Logged in go to "quick links" and "edit your details" and change what you drive (currently says Q45).
