E36 after replacing the maf Transmission light on transmission shifts hard
1997 328i had a poor idle and a hesitation on take off, I replaced the maf and the idle problem is gone but the Transmission warning light is on and the trans shifts hard with poor performance. Any ideals.

Auto or manual?

Gotta be an auto since manual cars don't have transmission warning lights. Changing the MAF shouldn't have affected the transmission, so I'd take it to a shop and have your TCU scanned.

With the old maf installed the trans warning is off. It's only on with the new one.

That makes less sense than not naming your kids Randy.

I think I've read somewhere that you need to have the ecu adaptation when installing a new maf, is this right?

No, I've never heard that, and people replace their MAFs all the time without doing anything with the ECU. This is a total mystery to me.

With the old maf installed the car does not want to rev up when it does it very slow. With the the maf unplugged the idle is better and the car revs up great but the trans light comes on and also the I same with the new maf.

It's sort of right. When you upgrade your 3" MAF to a 3.5" Porsche or 540i MAF you need to reflash your DME to get the most out of it (when it's combined with other upgrades/mods). But never to simply switch out your 3" MAF for another 3" MAF.
