550i Red-line Tolerance

How bad is it to red-line the engine?

The reason I ask is because when I floor it and the "kick-down" feature drops a couple gears the engine hits red line in a couple seconds. Needless to say, this has occurred several times and maybe a few for more than a couple seconds up to 7k. I'm starting to wonder what the long term ramifications are.

Probably a dumb question to ask, but it happens so easy in sport mode I cant be the only person to do it regularly. Yes, I know a new engine is worst case scenario

Running through the gears to redline frequently will increase wear on the engine, but the redline is intended as a safe maximum speed for it to run, some would even say continuously. The ECU is well equipped to protect from all but mechanical over-rev (such as you would incur if you selected a too-low gear on a manual transmission and engage the clutch (= boom...)).

It will not harm your engine. Since it is an auto and the fuel cut off, you can't over rev it that will cause damage. Actually red lining (technically yellow line) is good for the BMW engines. These motors were not designed to slog around in low RPM's. When you run high RPM's, it helps clean out your oil passages. Overly long 15k oil change intervals do more harm than redlining your car. I had a 545 which saw redlines every time I merged onto the highways and I had 75k with no engine leaks or issues.

You will probably just speed up engine wear but aside from that i see no problem at all.
I wouldn't say using kick down is bad but i don't think it's good to overuse it either.
Maybe you can just drive in DS, you get the instant response without the need to red line your engine all the time.

For the most part I figured it wasn't the end of the world, but just wanted to hear some opinions. It's pretty sweat knowing you can hit 6500 like no big deal.

I change the oil every 5k, but the service records prior to me owning it indicate it was done to BMW's minimalist standards every 15k. It's funny how my dealer will try to charge me up the a$$ for everything, but always questions me when I offer to pay for an oil change after 5000 miles.

If the engine would wear faster running it to redline, why does BMW set the redline at the current level when they know it will hurt the motor. I could see wear happening if you decided to keep run it at redline constantly for miles on end but your only there for 1 second at a time. I had a v8(375 rw hp) car which was a daily driver and ran 1/4 miles at the track all the time. I put over 75k miles on it and the car was still strong when I sold it. There is no way you could drive your car as hard as I drove that car and yours is a much better motor. Drive it like you stole it and don't worry. It is more fun that way.

I hear ya! Thanks for the input. I'm mostly just asking the question because of my previous experience with my 540. I drove it like I stole it at all times and changed the oil every 5k, but at 143k my timing chain guides failed. This caused a VANOS issue and it could not be repaired for less than the car was worth. Not that I'm trying to be conservative with my new car, but I just don't want to deal with a $5,000 repair if I can help it.

You redline didn't cause the timing chain issues, BMW did.

Do you do it with the DCT off?
Because when I had 245/40/18's at the back it would burn my tires from 0 to about 37mph and would hit the rev instantly when I would floor it, and keep burning the tires till it changes to 2nd gear.
