E46 auto tranny reliability by model & model year....
Because of the poll limitations I'm gonna lump all the non-failures together and only separate the failures by model and model year.
If you've had a tranny failure, please specify the type of failure.

Have a 99 323 05/99 build date. I have not experienced any troubles with it yet. I have not owned it that long and don't believe that previous owners touched the thing either. Thinking about changing the fluid when I get home from Iraq tour, but iffy on the subject reading others experiences with it. We'll see though. I'll post for sure when it blows though.
12/16/08 Trans pan gasket leak, still no failure.

I voted no failure. But I should note that it is possible that my car has been messed with before I got it. Some of the trans lines are not in the factory clips in the trans tunnel. So, from 113k miles to 163k miles, I have had no problems (well, that isn't true either, I had to do a fluid change to eliminate a constant (!) trans error and limp mode).

In BAV Auto's catalog, they said the transmission issues were fixed as of 3/2002. It will be interesting to see if the poll results follow this.

All I know is I paid 230 for all that, plus a radiator hose. The fault code was for excessive slippage. The car had 72,500 miles on it. They don't dig into them so it was a remove and replace deal. i have an 02 325i with 135k no tranny fail. or and slipping. I make sure i come in to a complete stop before i put it on gear.

I voted no failure as well. I believe that my car has had it's tranny serviced possibly bc some of the trans lines are not in the factory clips as well. Good from 80k to currently 150k. Knock on wood it continues!!

My vote yes was for same reason as smolk, but I see no meddling with tubing from previous owner.

1999 328i, automatic, 144,142 miles, with original transmission fluid, owned the car for 7 years and put over 113,000 miles in it. I traded it in for a 2004 330 Ci that was too sweet to pass up.
