What is this?

My car 2003 745li has a button on the steering wheel for voice command, but it does nothing. I found this picture online, I was curious, is this the control unit for the voice system? If so my car doesn't have this part installed. If this is the unit, could I purchase the unit and get it programmed to work? Thanks in advance.

I have an 03 too and my voice control works but I don't remember seeing that box.. I will check later today when I get the car out of the garage.

That is the voice module. You can retrofit anything but not worth it for this IMO.

Definately not worth retrofitting. I have never used it in any BMW. It just doesn't work well, and by the time the system understands your command you could have entered it with the knob or buttons five times.

I disagree.. I used it in my S class and I use it daily in my BMW.. I haven't played witth the functions for the radio or AC, or even if it works with the NAVI, but what I do use it for is saving names in the phone book and calling them. You can say "Dial Jim" and bam your talking to Jim..

If I wanted to install it, would I just need to purchase the module and plug it in, have it programmed? I have the button. Thanks
