I personally use Mobil 1 0W-40. I have used Mobil 1 for 30+ years with excellent results, it is widely available and relatively inexpensive. The 0W-40 is a "light" 40 that holds up well to driving in the desert mountains without danger of "shear-down".

However, if changed at 5-6K miles (or 200 hours of engine operation, whichever is less), any good quality synthetic motor oil of the right grade will do a great job.

Lots of folks like the BMW 0W-30, Royal Purple, Amsoil, as well as many of the German group IV base stock oils.

If you change the oil while the add pack is still intact (additive package contains many sacrificial elements that actually get used up as the oil oxidizes and takes on contaminants such as water, coolant and fuel blow-by) any good synthetic will do the job.

Just curious, what is your issue with Castrol oil?

Any BMW LL-01 approved oil will do fine.
I usually use Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 or Mobil 1 0W-40.

Hi, do a search for a post by me earlier. You will find a list. I have used Castrol and mobil from that list without any issues.

Remember to use a quality oil filter!!
It's not only about the oil, you need a good filter too. You can get an original BMW oil filter or go OEM.

oil change

I just changed the engine oil in my 2009 528xi, using Mobil 1 0W-40, a recommended oil that meets BMW LL-01 specs. In addition, a MANN oil filter (they make for BMW). Had 5000 miles on the old oil, at 8 months time. Other choices would be Amsoil European formula, Full SAP, Castrol syntec 5w-30, and of course you can buy oil at the dealer. Stick with the LL-01 oils for best results. I have had engine issues with other vehicles using Royal Purple, and would not recommend that brand. Pennzoil Ultimate is also a good choice in my book. Bottom line, don't buy into the 15000 mile oil change schedule for ANY car let alone a BMW.
