Wife swears e90 is faster off the line from 2nd

When she tries to smoke people.

I told her to put it in M1 and take the traction control off, and if she feels comfortable take the stability control off as well.

She says starting in 2nd takes away the hesitation.

I think she needs a spanking

Well, on the PS2 playing GT4 this is true for a number of the high-end race cars... The momentary loss in power caused by having to shift takes away the gearing advantage for acceleration in 1st vs 2nd. Fewer shifts means more continuous power. Unlikely "normal" cars see this effect though.

On the Mercedes SLK-GTR Race Car, my best quarter-mile times are starting in 2nd with traction control on and full revving prior to the 'gun'. If I start in 1st, I finish about .1 to .07 slower. It's very visible when driving against the "ghost" that in 2nd you start a hair slower, but get passed as you shift from 1st to 2nd.

I could see if 1st causes wheel slippage, or the traction controls to kick in, but there has to be reason for 1st, otherwise just make second first (is this Spinal Tap?).

That's why certain high-horsepower cars (Z06, Ford GT, Lambo M.) now go past 60mph in first gear - a lower gear would not help acceleration times. Still, the E90 isn't in this league. I guess what you really need is a performance meter to see the differences.

I <3 GT3 and GT4.........pretty damn close to real driving

Starting in 1st should provide better off-the-line response, since it gets into its powerband and peak hp faster. Starting in 2nd may feel faster cuz ur actually going "farther" before a shift.

GT4 is an arcade game and nowhere near a true driving simulator.

The tire physics, for one, are seriously flawed. You can go through tight hairpins in 300 hp RWD cars with an LSD at full throttle and the worst you'll get is a bit of uncontrollable snap oversteer. That's not even remotely realistic. Sorry.

Go download the working demo of Live for Speed S2 (www.liveforspeed.net) if you want an accurate consumer oriented driving simulator.

Just about 100% of the quickest & fastest 335 quarter miles have been set with a second gear start. Even my no so fastest or quickest time of 12.5 X 114mph was a second gear start. Maybe you should listen to the wife.

Revived thread! But very glad I saw it. I just got a 335i sedan a month ago, and after driving it I felt 2nd gear was a way smoother/faster start

What's a PS2?

I Googled it and it looks like something Edison may have designed.
