thats why you dont drive! and if you have too get a set of the steel cable type chains, I have had several pairs and have gone places where no one can go and they work on Ice too

I've been caught on sheet ice with new winter tires and had almost no control over the car. Scary to say the least

Ice is no man's land. A number of years ago, I was in my parents AWD Jeep Cherokee with A/S tires on black ice, residential flat street intersecting with a main street (in Colorado - Christmas week) went sliding thankfully in a forward not sideward motion. Most frightening day in the driver's seat I've ever had. When I learned to drive in Colorado it was exclusively with an MT. Black Ice, AT transmission, A/S tires - No thank you. I guess these days with DS mode, an AT could be better on ice and snow, but bottom line, when it's glare ice, there's not much you can safely do except stay home.

This is clearly an ice problem. If you live in either Oregon or Washington, studded tires are quite popular to the irritation of their respective Dept's of Transportation (due to the horrendous pavement damage that studded tires do).

Nevertheless, "political considerations" have failed to get studded tires banned in these states.
You'll notice quite deep "ruts" on Interstate I-5 if you're in that area...

Studded snow tires are still legal in New Jersey between November 15 and April 1. I used to run studded snows in the bad ol' days when I needed to get out of bed before the salt truck drivers.

The racket drove me crazy and my wife said she could hear my car from blocks away. The car's handling on dry pavement was atrocious.

But they were fantastic on ice!

Wednesday was a 70 degree day here in Denver. Sunday will be a balmy 19 degrees. Good thing the Broncos home game was last Sunday when it was almost 70 degrees.
