Newbie question

Could someone explain the logic of letter & number designations in different model years.

And yes, I know I'm showing my newness to Bimmers by asking. But I've learned that for every question not asked to avoid looking stupid, there are 100 others wondering the same thing. Besides, I'd rather look like a noob than remain ignorant!
