How reliable is the 06-07 550i?

Thinking about an 06-07 550i but if they aren't as reliable as a 06 330i or 07 328i please let me know.

I wouldn't neccesarily say that.

I put over 400K on I6's with their usual crappy cooling systems. I maintained the hell out of em and they lasted forever.

I have 90K now on my 07 550 and it too has been dead nuts reliable. The electronics will die before the engine does.

On an n=1, my I6 in a 3-series, which I put 150k miles on, is just as reliable as my 2 V8s in a 550i, which I put a total of 40k miles on. The most common problem I experienced with both is CEL for sensor faults.

If you are coming from a Japanese, or even an American brand, expect more cost in maintenance and repair.

I can only offer my .02 on my 07 550i, 105k with no problems whatsoever. I think the key is MAINTENANCE.

Both cars have problems, same problems and different problems. You can't say I-6 is more reliable then V-8 or other way around. BMW is avg in the reliability in the general.
I tell you one thing, I-6 (528, 530) simple and probably cheaper to maintain on long run, but I-6 turbo (535) could be a pita due unknown BMW turbo reliability. V-8 is on the head, can be have a lot leaks and can be no leaks at all, the oil change intervals make a difference. Other then this all electronics are same and break at same rate; flooding, battery is biggest issue. If I knew it, I would never buy E60, since it has lot problems with battery, alternator and IBS (intelligent battery sensor).
With V-8 you are getting smooth car with nice power at lower or at high rmp, with i-6 turbo you are looking more midrange rpm with ability to upgrade to more power, with i-6 none-turbo it's nice car but a little weak for such big car, but still faster than lot cars in this class.

Change the fluids like BMW used to and you will get much longer reliability. Follow the IDrive and the free maintenance, you will paying more in the long run.
