Paint and headlight protection films

Wondering if anyone had experience either diy or hiring someone to apply protection film on the headlights and hood to protect from rock chips and pitting.

Is this easy enough to do diy or should a pro do it and how much does it cost?

Is there a recommended film to use?

Thanks in advance for any insights.

3M film

Have a good professional do the front, headlights and hood it's expensive. Did the whole car with 3M film cost $4,500. I passed a rock truck at 90 mph when he was spitting out 3/4 inch rocks. Little damage to the film, but didn't hurt the paint or dent the hood. Had film replaced hood alone $550. Better than repair and paint, and the film makes it stand out (more of a wet look).

Definitely not a DIY project for the average person.

I may add the film to my 2015. I was very surprised how pitted my 2013 was when I turned it in. I have a 1999 VW that has may more miles and far fewer pits along the rim of the hood.

Wow that's a lot of $$$. How long is the film supposed to last??

I did the front with my E83 and I'm going to do that on my coming F25.

The bonnet and the bumper is relatively easy but he headlights are challenging especially if you use thicker films to get better protection (in theory). It needs a lot of stretch and precise cutting. I did the right hand light twice and couldn't perfect it.

The DIY 3M kit only costs a few hundreds on eBay.

The plastic headlights on cars seem to fade and scratch very quickly without protection. I bought a 12" x 48" roll of 3M Scotchgard Paint Protection Film for $34 and covered them. On my other cars the 3m film lasts about 8 years on the headlights, so then I just peel it off and apply new.

Agree, I have enough trouble putting a screen protector on a cell phone and still end up with dust particles under it.
