Lightbulb New and improved prediction for F33 Cabrio availability

I saw that a few places predict new Cabrio availability in 2014.

This does not seem to match what was happening last time new series was rolled out.

From wiki:

Car Production Period

E90 March 2005 - Sep 2008 (as 2006 model)
E90LCI Sep 2008 - Oct 2011

E93 March 2007 - March 2010 (as 2007 model)
E93 LCI March 2010 - (guess) March 2013

Thus if it follows the same pattern,

2012 model is a 2nd year LCI refresh model
It will be followed by 2013 model 3rd year LCI refresh in Sep 2012

F33 production will begin in March of 2013 and will be available for sale in Fall of 2013 as 2014 model

What do you think?

If you're basing your timeline off the previous E90 sedan a 2014 date would match up. E90 sedan was announced 10/26/2004, F30 sedan was announced 10/14/2011. Almost 7 years in the future to the day.

E93 press launch was 12/20/2006, moving that forward 7 years would be December 2013.
E93 went on sale in the US around 3/5/2007, moving that forward 7 years would be spring 2014.

That being said BMW is breaking from tradition and moving faster on rolling out the new cars. I wouldn't be surprised to see the F33 in 2013.

I was wondering over the 7 year gap in press releases compared to 6 year models in a series.
My guess is that the cycle is 6 years + (a few extra month for retooling for LCI and a few more month to retool for new series).

In my prediction I was (possibly overy optimistic with retooling times. Progress technology and all those things might help to retool faster)

With convertibles, I think BMW will either try to hit Fall of 2013, since there are few more month of nice weather to ride with top down. If they cannot retool fast enough to hit the fall of 2013 release, then they can announce it later in 2013 and make it available in the spring of 2014 as you were predicting in another thread.

The life cycle is generally seven years. But, they are doing things a little different this time. Historically we would expect a short 2012 model year for the E90/91. Then they bring the new model to market between March & May as a 2013 model.

I think your timing prediction is probably pretty accurate.

Fall of 2013 is exactly when my E93 lease expires. Something to think about. I'm excited.

I can't wait to see how F33 turns out. Cabin tech and exterior design of F30 are satisfactory so far. Hopefully it's folding hardtop, and engineers eliminated rattles and squeaks. And most of all, I wonder if F33 will look as beautiful and elegant as E93.

I bumped into a BMW partner in an airport security line last week and asked about availability of the 4 series. He had bags covered in BMW logos, his bag label had a business card clearly showing he worked for a European partner of BMW (partner name and airport intentionally omitted for privacy). Expecting a shoulder shrug he instead gave me a very assertive answer...(he appeared in the know).

He said that the 4 series likely will not go into production until 2015, the convertible not until 2016. I asked why and he said plant tooling.

Can you take this to the bank? Possibly not, but he answered unhesitatingly.

I had been planning to hold out for a 4 series, but as a direct consequence of this conversation ordered a 3-series convertible this week. (2016 is a long way out!)

Apparently that guy had been smoking crack right before you spoke with him. The F32 4 Series coupe will be on the market for the 2014 model year. Pre-production models have already been photographed sans any camouflage. The 'verts, F33s, will not be far behind. Almost certainly on the market in time for summer 2014, if not before.

You could well be right. So if we assume the 'vert trails 6-12 months when would you estimate the 4-series would show up in the US?

I expect it no later than spring 2014 and it won't surprise me if it's here sooner. BMWNA will not have a summer selling season go by with no convertible. The E46 sold through the 2006 model year and the E93 went on sale in March 2007.

Whoever you were talking to is out of the loop. BMW has already published the end of production date for the E92 3 series coupe as July 2013. The F32 4 series coupe (3 series successors) will be on sale at the end of the summer or early fall 2013 as a 2014 model. The F33 4 series convertible will start production end of the summer 2013 and hit showrooms December 2013 or January 2014 as a model year 2014.

I may be in the minority, but I like the soft top better. It was a classic design. Now it's not. A 'vert outta be a "ragtop", not a hardtop with creases in it. The soft top just looks better. As for squeaks, my last BMW 'vert was as tight as could be. Sitting inside, unless you knew it, you couldn't tell it was a soft top. I know ya can't argue with sales numbers, but to me, BMW blew it on this one.

No. E93 (and E92 as well) production runs through July 2013, this is confirmed via communications to dealers. BMW usually takes a month or so to re-tool, that means production will probably start 09/2013, with deliveries to come 1-2 months later.

I agree. I much prefer the Audi A5 soft-top. And they make soft-tops so incredibly well these days there's just no need for the extra weight and complexity of such a large hard-top. The Z4 hard-top is great, because it is much smaller.

He made that statement as speculation more than a year ago.
