Seriously, What The Hell Is This Part?

I confirmed the charcoal canister is in the trunk as goes the common knowledge.

So, what is this thing? I can't find it ANYWHERE online and there's conveniently no part number for it on Real OEM. The best part is that it doesn't even have a label on the diagram! It's the bottom right part, the canister looking device. http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?...72&hg=13&fg=15

If anyone can get me a part number and official name to search for it that would be great. Tried googling some of the p/ns in the diagram and none appeared to be it.

I am 99.99% sure that is the charcoal canister...

Who or what told you it's in the trunk?

That's not the charcoal canister in the trunk that's the evap system test pump. I forget what year it was mandated, but evap systems after a certain date have to be self verifying. That required the addition of some valves and a pump to periodically pressure the fuel storage and evap control system to check for leaks. This is why you get a CEL if you run the engine with the gas cap loose or missing.

yeah, i thought the charcoal canister was inthe trunk as i saw all sorts of poly tubes and solenoid valves...didn't take the cover off, though, as i was putting various pieces and parts in the trunk oof the parts car.

that being said, all obd2 cars are supposed to be self checking on the evap system. most use manifold vacuum to test, but this thing looks like bmw used a motor to supply vacuum??

never had to perform an evap service to the bmw's is all...lots of others, but no mercedes or bmw's...

could always tell when people would go to a new 'chain' gas station as a rash of loose gas caps would be dropping in...po440....all day....

(nj is a full service state, btw...)

Yes they did and now almost everyone does because the standard has changed again the evap systems get tested periodically even when the engine is off. On the Corolla we had it seemed like it tested about once an hour.

That's an OBDI part only brah......

It's called "activated charcoal filter" on Real OEM, which is the same name given to the charcoal canister in the trunk on OBDIIs. (pn 16131183509) I really think the trunk one supplants it. I just don't understand why I have lines for it when RealOEM lists that pn as valid through 95 only.

This is the junk in the trunk. It's interesting that for the 328 the housing is called out but not the actual filter.....

Right, that's in my trunk, which is obdii.

Look even at the link you gave earlier in this thread, that other part is for M50 only but I still have lines and mounts .

I only had a few minutes previously to do a quick check but it looks like there's some variations depending on the build date. My car is a 12/1995 build and according to the BMW site I've got a charcoal canister there that also has a shutoff valve attached to it (as do 318's and 323's), but 325s don't get the shutoff valve.....
Also looks like 12/1995 was a transition month too.

I'm a late 96 build IIRC, anyone able to take a look at a stock emissions system on their M52 and let me know what's up? This makes no sense to me.

Chad, catch me up on this... Do you think you're missing the canister under the hood, yet all the part numbers listed for the part you think you're missing are for OBD1 E36s? I'm pretty sure mine does not have anything like that smaller charcoal canister under the hood (and I know for sure it has that weird thing in the spare tire well), but I can take a look for you. Lemme know exactly what/where you want me to look at, and I'll take a peek tonight after work. And for reference, my 328 was built in 02/97, listed as MY98.

Can you see a part number? The one listed earlier is M42/M50 only according to Real OEM. If it's not obvious don't worry about it.

It's at the front of the engine just underneath the intake manifold, right? Black w/ gray stripe tube goes into the bottom, and black w/ blue stripe goes into the side (driver's).

Maybe I'm thinking about something else.

No, it's mounted to the drivers strut tower under the intake hoses.

Just got home and had a chance to look in my engine compartment. 328iC, build date 12/95 and I do not have that or anything resembling that in my engine compartment, and no dangling hoses either.

Oh, and I was remembering wrong about the pump being in the trunk on E36s. It was the Corolla we had that had the evap pump back there.

Ok. We're making progress, thanks for the info Don.

Next question, in the pic below notice 3 things.
-Blue hard plastic pipe with nothing connected to it
-Rubber mounts on strut tower
-Red cap on port on the fuel evap control valve

The blue hard line and mounts are really throwing me off. The valve is expected, it's the one that mounts to the intake mani brackets on a rubber bushing. Should have a hose connected where the red cap is (dismantlers plugged it prior to cleaning) and I'm not quite sure where it should go.

Any ideas.

I snapped some pics of my setup. These will either clear things up or add to the confusion because I don't think mine looks anything like yours. I did snap a pic of the so called "hose schematic" on the driver strut tower.....

You rock man! Thanks. I'll compare when I get home. My schematic looks the same but I don't think it has the vapor liquid separator text and something else.

But, your setup actually looks pretty similar. That valve looks like it was just connected directly to the blue plastic line. Mine is mounted up by the mani but that could be changed for smog purposes. I need to compare a bit more but that's something. Thanks!

Don, you're a gentleman and a scholar.

Problem solved. The valve does NOT go here as I thought:

It looks like it actually attaches here as Don showed and the horizontal port is clipped to the blue hose:
