Replacing a head gasket, what else do i need to do?

I have a 1994 525i M50 with vanos.
ill be buying Head gasket set
Bolts
Valve cover Rubber seal and washer
what else would i need?

that should be fine, depends on what else you'll need to replace when you're in there. So far thats a decent list. When you have the head off, send it to a machinist to have him measure it and make sure its flat and crackless. while it's gone see if theres other parts you wanna replace...

That's why I hate working on the BMW. Everything has to be ordered or it will cost an arm and leg.
I seem to recall the valve cover gasket used flange nuts. How about a new coolant drain plug? Don't forget the coolant.
Are you replacing some of the hoses or clamps? Have fun let us know how it ends.

Don't know if you've already started but my post may help. Pay special attention to the cam removal as they are hollow and don't unbolt like traditional cams. Not following the correct procedure will result in breaking them.

cams are a toughie in this regard. Ive gotten so used to taking them out and putting them back its like a second nature for me, forgot abou that. this is the article i used and it was awesome.

this is important, assuming you are replacing it because the car over heated, and not just for the hell of it. the aluminium heads on these engines warp VERY easily
