a teensy reminder...we drive them because we love them - Bimmerfest

One of the things I appreciate about bimmerfest is the honesty most folks display regarding their Bimmers - the bad as well as the good.

Yes, there are days when a Cadillac/Mercedes/Lexus/Infiniti/Acura/Audi/Volvo will exhibit some superiority to a Bimmer, when some survey or other will tout the superiority of one of the forementioned to a BMW.

Reliability, HP and handling are definitely reasons to buy one car over the other...but I would submit, in the end, it comes down to, quite frankly, love.

As many of you know, I test drove pretty much most of the cars in the near-luxury class: Infiniti G35 Sedan (Before It Came With A Real Transmission and After It Finally Got A Real Transmission

), Infiniti G35 Coupe, Audi A4 1.8T and 3.0, Volvo S60 T5, Saab 9-5 (olde version), Cadillac CTS, Acura CL Type-S (not made anymore), Acura TL (olde version).

All of these are good cars in their own right, with many excellent features to recommend them.

Why did I finally settle on a BMW 325i? It was love at first drive - the handling, the exhaust note, the interior - I actually saved the BMW for the last of my test drives becuase I had a feeling (women's intituition

) that as soon as I drove the car, I would buy one (even though my first Bimmer testdrive was in a 325i Without A Real Transmission

I post here and at Car and Driver, and many a poster has waxed wroth over some quirk/peculiarity/"feature" (as we say in IT when software has bugs) of a BMW.

Are they perfect? No. And Bimmerphiles should keep the pressure on the Bayerische Motoren Werke to keep pressing on towards perfection.

However, a BMW is like nothing else on the road and in many ways, is The Ultimate Driving Machine!
