Programing a new key

When I purchased the car (used) it only came with one key. They ordered another key and I picked it up but it doesn't work. The hard key opens the door but you can't start it. The key fob buttons don't do anything. The Salesman tried to program it but was unable and said I have to bring it in for service.

Was hoping someone knew something he didn't so I don't have to take it back. Even though they will come and pick it up and drop me off a loaner.

You need to take it to the dealer. It's not like pairing a bluetooth device, they need to delete the previous key from the car and also pair the new key. This can only be done with the computer systems they have.
