Z4 buyer's guide??

I searched. Promise.

A friend is buying a 2003 Z4 (2.5L) and I was wondering if anyone could point me to an FAQ or similar thread/link of things to look out for? I looked in the locked thread up top but it is more useful after you have bought it. I searched and found no joy.

Thanks.

Really? No list of things to look out for? No things to check when you buy?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for buying tips / things to look for when buying a 06-08 3.0si. I did a search on buying tips and the search led me to this thread. Please share your thoughts or provide any helpful links. Thanks in advance!

Problem areas in the Z4 were pretty well resolved by the time the facelifted ('06-'08) Z4s were produced. The problem areas were few:

- The "sticky steering" issue was resolved in the late '06 model year.
- The N52 engine noisy lifter issue was resolved in the late '07 model year.
- The power top motor can fail (any model year) if you are not diligent about keeping the drains clean.

With the '07 model, you got an "Aux" input for the radio and real TPMS (tire pressure) sensors (earlier models used the ABS sensors), but that was about it.

Thanks guys!

Will dealers share the service history of a car if I ask them? Or does the current owner (2nd) have to provide these? I know the name of dealerships that were used to service the car.

My dealer where I sometimes buy things ran a service history on it for me without giving the former owner's name.

Any out advice out there on what to look for and test on my test drive?

Should I open the hood and look for anything in particular? Look for smoke out of the tailpipe at start up? Any advice is appreciated. I'm test driving sunday!

Get a pre-purchase inspection for an expert opinion. Worth the money and sometimes free if you have a relationship with a shop.

I'm not the authority on cars by any means, but I've always heard smoke from the tailpipe (not steam or vapor when its cold) is burning oil.

not sure if this has been posted before, but this is an informing site regarding issues/what to look for:

Good luck with the Z4 hunt. I bought a 2.5si (although definitely cool, I thought the 3.0 would be a bit too thirsty with gas prices what they are here). I tracked down the service centre for my car in the UK but they said that once the car was sold they didn't keep any records. Seemed a bit strange to me considering everything's on computer these days, but I couldn't press them for the info. Seems a shame as I really would have appreciated the service history that they probably did have on file. I got a pre-purchase check done by the AA - all was good except for what they thought were a lot of scratches/marks on the paintwork.
Like every Z4 owner, I'm kind of dreading looking at the convertible top motor too closely but it's working great at the moment.... (just a bit worried if the previous UK owner left it outside considering the weather there... lol)

I bought a '07 3.0si in March and dealer showed me the service history and said 'they are not supposed to'

I had my existing car (nissan xterra - good SUV btw) being serviced last week so I walked over to the BMW dealer next door and started chatting with a service guy about getting a PPI. During our conversation, I mentioned how the car I'm considering was purchased from a BMW dealer in the area and asked nicely if he could pull the service history. I told him I was concerned about the top 3 issues: noisy lifts/cams (not sure exactly what this is), sticky steering, and the roof motor. He was knowledgeable about the Z4's issues. He agreed to show me the history on his computer screen and even printed the history after cutting off the personal information of the previous owners.

So, sometimes I guess dealers will provide the info if they're nice enough.
