Mechatronics tsb
Hello. I just took my 535xi in for inspection and was told the mechatronics sleeve is leaking and will need replaced. Only 49000 miles on the car and well maintained by me in general. Out of warranty just about 10 months. I was just there right before the end of the warranty for routine service and it wasn't noted the n.
I'm planning on call bmw client services tomm to discuss trying to get them to cover it give the mileage and age of the car. I know this is a common problem on these cars. Does anyone know if there is a TSB out on this that I can quote when I call them. I would greatly appreciate any help with this. |

Either way you need to replace the sleeve or the tranny will lock up on you. All 2008 models have this issue, I have replaced on both our cars. One was preventive. The new sleeve has a different O-ring design.

My 535 Xi is currently at the shop finishing this same job. A few lessons learned...
The X-Drive cars require considerably more work to replace the mechatronic sleeve due to the transfer case bracket blocking access to remove/refit the sleeve. You need to unbolt parts of the exhaust, remove multiple heatshields and remove the TC bracket. (I learned this the hard way after getting half way done with the job in my driveway). California Transmission Supply has the best prices for parts. In the service kit, Klaus sells the fluid for about $20/ liter (vs. $35 at my dealer) and his replacement pan and sleeve are ZF brand. Also, I agree with Klaus that replacing all the pan bolts is unnecessary. The OE bolts are steel and I noticed a bit of galvanic corrosion, but nothing major and they have very low torque loads. My mechanic says that some people are going to aluminum pan bolts to avoid the corrosion, but I think that's unnecessary. Change the Transfer Case fluid while your doing this job. The access to the fill hole on the transfer case is difficult to reach, so while the exhaust, heatshields, etc are out of the way, might as well do the TC fluid. 0.6 liters of fluid is needed, but it's pricey ($55/ liter). Hope this helps. |

Good advice and agree the Xdrive is more work. This job really needs to be done on a lift. My cars had 75k miles on them when I did it and I replaced pans on both since they have a built in filter. I paid $115 for the ZF stamped one at ECS Tuning. It is identical to the BMW stamped one which sells for twice that. I also replaced 6-7 liters of tranny fluid on each. I believe the bolts are actually magnesium, they are quite expensive and we replaced a couple. No need to do the full set. As I recall they were $4 each!

Thanks for the advice. It's beyond the scope my mechanical ability to fix this but I do like to know what's going on. I'm trying to see if I can get some goodwill from BMW.
