Basket weave wheel removal
I just bought my first e30 and it has basket weave aluminum wheels. How do I get the center cap off to expose the lug nuts?

Gently twist CCW - the cap will pop away from the rim.

One of the wheels has a freely spinning center cap, just the very center plastic part, not the whole aluminum cap. Is spinning the plastic part what you're referring to, or does the aluminum cap spin off as well?

you want to spin the huge "nut" in the center. it will pop off and the waffle around it will come off with it.
