Blue Jean Fade

Hey Guys,

I have a 2013 X3 with the saddle interior. This is my wife's daily driver and over the last month or so, I have noticed that the blue jean dye has faded into the leather seats in the front. Both driver and passenger. I have tried some basic cleaning, but wondered if anyone has found a way to clean the dye's out? What I have done has removed some, but not enough to make it non-noticeable.

This is the primary reason I went with the black seating surface. I was at an Auto show and noticed the X3 at the show had really badly stained seats from all the blue jean clad arses.

I've got the same problem with saddle brown and have not yet found a solution. Maybe black interior is the answer after all.

I don't see a Saddle Brown in the BMW build tool. Do you mean Beige?

About all you can do is let it go for a few years and then have the seat re dyed. I had an old E39 in light gray done one time and you couldn't tell it. Another thing that will probably happen is that your belt will eventually rub the dye completely off in one or two spots. Oh yea, and the side bolster will wear poorly from rubbing against it getting in and out if you have the sport seats.

We've got the Oyster Nevada in our 2011. I've read about blue dye transfer from other members but have experienced it only once. My wife had a new pair of blue dyed pants (not quite blue jeans). A little Griots leater care spray and some rubbing took it off. I'd recommend trying a good leather cleaner and then checking it every time you clean the vehicle.

I spritz on some Leatherique cleaner each time I wash it. Keeps my Oyster pretty clean.

I ALSO NOTICED A BLUE TINT ON MY OYSTER SEATS USED THE BMW LEATHER CARE KIT AND IT CLEANED IT UP NICE. I THEN ORDERED THE BMW SEAT VESTS FOR THE FRONT. KIND OF A PAIN TO INSTALL BUT WORK WELL AND GIVE THE SEATS A COOL LOOK !

A detailer can get that stain out. I had major problems with that in my (now sold) X5. Took it to a professional detailer who got 90+ percent of the stain out after five years of use. Costs some money, but it can be done.

You would think that after 60 years or more the denim folks would figure out how to make a colorfast blue indigo dyed fabric that would not transfer to leather. That seems to be the only color that does this -- or at least that I have seen. It is not a new problem, nor one that is restricted to BMW, it covers all marques and has been a problem since well before I worked in a gas station way back in the day. I still recall white leather uhpolstered Caddies and Packards with the tell tale blue stain on the beautiful pleated leather. We used a solvent based cleaner to remove the stains but the EPA banned it years ago. Griot's stuff works pretty well now, but you have to work at it.
