BMW NA HAS JUST DISCONTINUED WIPER INSERTS FOR THE E53, PART NUMBER
61 61 0 154 440 AND 61 61 0 154 441

I highly suggest getting them now because you will end up replacing both blades which will be about $85 retail, insteado of inserts which cost about less than 10 bucks to replace each time.

Huh? Any auto parts joint on the planet has wiper blade replacements, of several brands and levels of 'quality' within those brands.
None cost 85 bucks a pair.

Key word here are inserts, I didn't say wiper blades... Of course you can get wiper blades anywhere but you can't just get oem wiper inserts anywhere... So go ahead and get after market wiper blades when you can get wiper inserts for a couple bucks

Did they say if those part numbers are being replaced with new numbers? Those numbers are already in the "value line" category which aren't listed on sites like realoem...so again they may just be replacing them with a superseded number. (Crossing fingers).

BTW...the rubber refills in the pic below are the items being discussed...just the refills...not the entire replacement wiper blades:

Not to start a war here, but why would you want to buy the inserts?

Way back when, the inserts were cheaper than the whole wiper blade, and in general people felt bad about throwing away stuff, so everyone bought inserts and rarely if ever replaced the blade itself.

Today, new cars don't even have the option of replacing the insert.

In general, the new single piece blade/insert combo performs better for a longer period than the new insert does (at least in my experience).

So, is there anyone out there who likes to replace the insert (instead of having the whole blade replaced)?

Obviously I'm one that prefers to replace the inserts. The ones on my DD lasted from 2009-2012 and only cost a few bucks. There was nothing wrong with the whole blade, so spending upwards of $20 ea when all was needed was new rubber makes cents.

I paid less to replace all the rubber on my e38 & e39 Touring...than the cost of one replacement blade.

Pretty sure whenever i replace my blades they give me the same piece, its always longer and I always trim it. Its pretty much the same for every Bmw i have owned.

looks like BMW is doing this for all model.
Just went to dealer to get wiper inserts for E60, and no more. A pair of complete wipers were $129, on holiday sale for $99; but no thanks.
Went to O'relley and get Trico extreme blades for $35 a pair, as good as BMW if not better.
Yes the ole way of inserts with steel skeleton is no more, or go get Goodyear at Costco, sometime they are on sale $14 for a pair (buy one get one free deal).
