Chips on the windshield, lots of them

I started realizing at 2K miles that my windshield had very tiny chips from dust and other tiny debris hitting it (I had no rocks hitting the car so far). At 10K miles, and most of them are city driving only, I have almost the whole windshield covered with the tiniest chips. They are not cracks or large chips and they are not very visible when not driving directly toward a light source like headlights or sun, but they sure sparkle when doing so. My Mercedes does not have this issue and none of my other previous cars had this issue either. Anybody experiencing the same issue?

Sorry to say, but that's pretty normal. I'm on my third 535 and all have had the same problem. My current is four months old and I can see them starting to form. Like you said however, they are really only noticeable when driving into the sun, so I've pretty much learned to ignore them. Not about to replace the windshield only to have the same problem re-appear.

Interesting. I was amazed how fast those chips covered the whole windshield. I am driving in the same area with my other cars and never have a similar problem so far. (And on top of that, I am not a high mileage owner - still have 2.8K miles to the first service after 18 months.)
I wonder if that's a quality issue with the glass material of the windshield?

I had a daily 70 mile highway commute for a few years on my previous '11 535i. Yes, even light "dust" on the road, those tiny sounds you hear when it hits, creates a whole windshield full of specs -- it's really bad. I also have never had another make vehicle that is so susceptible to windshiield deterioration.

German glass is notoriously soft. Porsche, Audi and Mercedes all have similar issues with pitting.

I'm about to have the windshield replaced on my 2014 535ix with HUD (a semi threw a stone and put a dime-sized star in the bottom corner on the driver's side which turned to a foot-long crack the next day), and asked my insurance company to cover the OEM replacement. They agreed, but based on this thread, I'm not so sure that's a great idea.

Are there alternatives that are less prone to these chips, or options for treating the windshield that will minimize the issue?

I know this is an F10/F11 thread and my windshield is much older, but I have the same problem, and I was wondering just this afternoon whether anything can be done about it.

Is it possible to polish the windshield to remove the tiny chips? Or does it make sense to replace the windshield with something harder?

I wonder if BMW has any treatment for CPO cars in terms of reducing the chips on the windshield.

my 2013 with 8k miles has several ... that's why I opted for an xPel clear bra on the front end incl the headlights. The windshields on these cars suck ... no doubt about it!

I so wish there was an Xpel clear-bra product for windsheilds. I guess it may be a safety issue so that is why there is not?
