3D perspective - at least with just roads/landscape - always works. If you're in 3D mode (horizon), when you turn on "perspective in 3D mode" you can see the long-distance mountains/topology difference as you zoom out (with the day or night sky depending on time).

However, to see buildings (and get any real benefit), you have to be in a city area, zoomed in around 400 feet (100/200/400). It used to only be 100/200 I think, but I'm not certain.

There are definitely more buildings in the 2013 update - with additional detail (i.e. Coca-Cola's headquarters has their logo). Doesn't appear to be much slower, but it does get noisy with detail.

Well, unless you are willing to get Dealer Programmed, I do not think you will make any progress on USB updating.

However, you can be the Guinea Pig on the 2013 USB to DVD Media Conversion I have. I am uploading it to your FTP site. You should do just as you did for 2012, but use the new 2013 Iso Images I am sending you, which were manually created from the 2013 USB version.

Shawn,
Success, and thanks for the help. In hope of easing the posts you have to make regarding installation, I've taken the liberty of consolidating your answers to several different questions from other members and re-posting the full set here:
0) Download and install WinRAR and 7-zip. Download the 23 *.RAR files. Procure and print your FSC code.
1) Use WinRAR to open "v.2013_NA_PREMIUM_CIC_USB.part01.rar", which will actually open all 23 parts for you behind the scenes, and then you will see inside the archive a file named "BMW_NAV_2013_NA_PREMIUM_USB.img". Drag this file to your desktop to extract it from the archive.
2) Now open "BMW_NAV_2013_NA_PREMIUM_USB.img" on your desktop with 7-Zip and you will see the config.nfm file and pkgdb folder. Drag these to your desktop to extract them from the archive,
3) Copy the config.nfm file and pkgdb folder to the root directory of a Fat32 formatted USB flash drive.
4) Take the USB drive and your VIN-unique FSC code to your car. The car needs power as the update will take 40 minutes to complete. Either run the engine or use auxilary power.
5) Insert the USB flash drive into the glovebox USB Port.
6) Wait a few seconds and iDrive will pop up prompting you to upgrade.
7) Enter the FSC code and the update will proceed.
8) After update, several minutes will pass before you will see the new version listed on the Navigation Software Version display.

So what could go wrong if this does not work? Could it brick my iDrive?

Sorry for the late reply.

Having an issue

Shawn,

Followed steps as stated above in post 282, when my system rebooted and tried to start up the new maps I got the following error. "To start navigation, please insert map DVD"

- Win32 USB 32GB in glovebox
- Proper FSC code accepted
- 40 min install to 100%
- System automatically restarted at end of process to the above error????

Please help.

Bob

You're not so late...14 chunks uploaded and still 9 to go.

No it can't brick your head unit. It will work or it won't. If it doesn't do the update, you stay at 2012 where you are at now.

I just answered your PM.

1) Did you remove the USB Drive from the Glovebox Port?
2) Have you tried completely shutting down the car for 10 minutes and restarting it?

Try pressing and holding the Mute Button in for 30 seconds to reboot the iDrive system.

Will you fly to Ohio if that statement is not true and fix it JK!

I will create the first DVD in to see if it says YO there are new maps. But if it does not know there are multiple DVD's I may not do it.

Thanks Shawn

What happens when you put the USB Drive back in the glovebox port?

When I put it back in the glovebox, I get the same error, it is like the idrive does not know where the map data is? I can't even get it to try the upgrade process again. Very nervous...

Never got any DVDs with the car, I picked it up new from the dealer preloaded with 2012 installed as it is a 2012. Wish I had a DVD to try.

I don't know. I have never heard of any car that after the upgrade started, it did not finish 100% then work afterward. This is a first among literally thousands. I say let the car completely shut down, like for a full hour, then try it again.

Will do, getting late here in New England. I will pick it up in the morning. I will keep usb out of glovebox, reset idrive one more time, and let it sit over night. I will also rebuild USB drive over night just in case it is a file issue. Thanks for the help, I will post tomorrow what the outcome is.

Ok. Sounds good. Hopefully a good night rest will do the trick.

Shawn or myself can PM you the info for the 2012 dvd's if you like. Well if that is ok with Shawn. I can even send you the DVD's I used to upgrade mine to 2012 maps. You can PM me with your address and I will try to get them in the mail tomorrow if you want to go that route.
