Is The 2013 Nav Update Worth Doing?

Shawn and GroveTuckey,

Just wanted to give you both an update to my saga durning the maps update. As you know I tried to upgrade my BMW NAV CIC 2012 maps to 2013 via the USB drive method. Once the upgrade was done 100% and the iDrive rebooted, my system was stuck at "To start navigation, please insert the map DVD" to continue. Nothing I did could get it past this point, could not do the upgrade again as the iDrive already though I had the 2013 Maps.

So I down graded to the CIC 2012 DVD-DL 3 disk set, it took some time. I even drained the battery and had to go for a ride before continuing. (BTW, how do you load the dvds when your driving as the system locks out the dvd player and I had to start from the beginning a few times, but that is another story for another time.) Any how, once I got the 2012 maps back in the car and the iDrive rebooted, the nav systems was up and working with the original 2012 maps as when I started.

During this long process of upgraded from the DVDs I tripled checked the USB loader, files, and file structure. I found that my USB drive was missing 2 files that were in the original image file but for some reason did not make it to my drive. (I will take that one as user error as I was building the USB drive on my MAC not a PC)

Lastly, once I was back to my starting point with the 2012 maps installed on the CIC drive AND a properly configured USB drive. I bravely put the USB drive in the glove box and behold, 40 mins later my Nav unit was upgraded to 2013 maps without issue, YEA.

Shawn and GroveTuckey thank you very much for your assistance with my issue loading these properly working / factory OEM maps. Without your help I would have been up the creek without the paddle, as they say. You guys were life savers and I am really glad that Bimmerfest was here to allow us all to discuss.

Hey man, thanks for the update, and figuring out what went wrong. I have been pulling my hair out on this one. I am glad you now have 2013 Maps.

We still need to figure out how to get 2013 Map DVD's for those with pre 09/2009 builds.

That is freaking awesome man!! Thanks for the update. I am glad you were able to downgrade and start from scratch.

I was able to do this without the car locking out the dvd player. I took my wife to the pet store and done some other things while the files were loading.

My car does play dvd's and locks playback once the car is taken from park.

As far as the DVD conversion from the USB drive goes I found out while looking at the individual DVDs that there's an index file on each one of them with the CRC of each pkg. When I tried to copy all three to a single USB drive (for the reinstall of the 2012 maps - tried to do a short cut) however the copy process kept telling me that there were three files that need to be overwritten by the same file name so I am guessing that you might need to Figure out those indexing CRC files and create the proper one for a merged file set. Just a thought.

After I attempted the second time to load the maps (or rather after I followed directions correctly ) it worked perfectly.

Definitely need a 32GB USB flash drive, my clever compact flash work around failed.

If anyone is too intimidated by the download process or multi conversion programs needed (its easy if you follow Shawn's directions) hit me up and I will send you my USB drive with the proper files. You will still need to hit up Shawn for the FSC code info and directions. You could just send me the USB drive back after or keep it and paypal me the cost (think it was $14).

Yes, I thought the I info was for obtaining FSC codes and I was going to try and source the Australia & NZ maps somehow.

I successfully updated the 2011 maps on my Jan 2011 build to the 2013 maps today. Thank you Shawn for the download. I didn't see any difference in the 10 minute test drive, but didn't really expect to.
