I've already got my code, but can't figure out how exactly to access the files to load onto my usb.
You use WinRAR to open "v.2013_NA_PREMIUM_CIC_USB.part01.rar", which will actually open all 23 parts for you behind the scene, and then you will see inside the archive a file named "BMW_NAV_2013_NA_PREMIUM_USB.img". Drag this file to your desktop to extract it from the archive.

Now open "BMW_NAV_2013_NA_PREMIUM_USB.img" on your desktop with 7-Zip and you will see the config file and pkgdb folder. Drag these to your desktop to extract them from the archive,

Lastly, copy the config file and pkgdb folder to the root directory of a Fat32 formated drive. If you are unsure about your drive format, open Windows Explorer, Right Click on the Drive and select Properties, and on the General Tab, look at the File System. It should say Fat32. If it says something else like NTFS, you will need to reformat it to Fat32.

Maybe with the Mac OS File System, it reports differently.
Well I am getting a 21 gig file from the windows side also. No errors in winrar. I was trying to look at GIANITALIAN to see if I could tell the size of the file he had but the pic was not close enough.

Sorry the last pick was clear. But was he 7zing the file? Up it seems like he was....

I think he should be using 7z to get the files from the .img file.

If someone has the files on a usb drive can they look to see what the size is on the drive?

I am just trying to make sure I don't have messed up files as I am not able to upgrade my system the USB port.

Thanks in advance!

No wonder. That picture shows you are compressing it. Compressing an already compressed image file will take a damn long time, not to mention won't do anything.

You need to be extracting it. Just open the .img file in 7-Zip and drag the file and folder to your desktop to extract it. That is it.

The final file in my USB is a folder name pkgdb and it is 21.2GB. Is that the right one. I wanted to check with you before I put this in my glove box.

This is correct. The .img file is a USB Image file, so it is a mirror image of the entire BMW Map Thumb drive, byte-for-byte, so it is a full 32 Gb.

The actual content, the file and folder is actually only 21 Gb.

Yes I am getting exactly what are you getting. In the upper right corner of your extraction screen you see total size which is 21764 MB, however GIANTALIAN's extraction screen total size in the upper right corner is around 29000MB. Also his file says PREMIUM_CIC_USB, while yours and mine only says PREMIUM_USB.

I don't what different he is doing. GIANTALIAN can you give any suggestions.

Looks like you're extracting the file. As Shawn has stated it should result in a folder (pkgdb - 25 folders and 12 separate files) and then a separate file (config.nfm). The folder logs at 21.2 GB and the config.nfm logs at 237 bytes. If your setup looks like this it will complete the update fine.

As a note. You don't have to do the update in a complete session. I shut down my vehicle 4 times during the update. It restarted where it left off when I started the vehicle again.

Of course, thanks to Shawn for managing the files for this. If it was open we'd probably lose the upload in a few days. It takes a significant amount of time to make the files that Shawn does available and still he doesn't ask for anything in return. Seems like a pretty good deal for us.

Sean

I think he just got confused and messed the files up some. He will need to start over.

So if I am not able to upgrade via usb would a dealer make it to where I could. I hate to pay them but if it could save me money in the following years I may have them do it. I think if I can't upgrade my maps with the current way they are providing them they should update my software under warranty.

Thank!

Honestly, I think that when something as simple has extracting a file is so difficult, then you should have the dealer take care of you.

Shawn is a treasure to the coding community. We should value his time.

I agree Shawn is very helpful.

I assume that comment was not directed to me, but if I take my car to the dealer and they can't update with the USB will they upgrade the CIC software or what have you for no charge?

Highly doubtful they'll do the software upgrade for free since the update is something you've requested (Navigation update necessitates a software update). The dealer needs to be paid by someone (owner or BMW) for the labor costs they incur.

I don't know anything about the earlier 3 series cars, but I'll ask my dealer since my car is having a software update done on Wednesday.
