Should I be concerned?

Z4 Roadster/E85

I am just now noticing a taping sound at idle. Sounds like a valve train issue. Due for an oil change in 1000 miles. Any thoughts? Do I need to jump on this right away?

I had similar in my 08 3.0si.
My car was still under warranty.
The exhaust lifters were the culprits.
Apparently I got the third revisions of those, as this has been an ongoing condition.
Apparently one of the issues is that while the tap is irritating, even embarrassing, mechanically it isn't a problem.

This will go away when you change the oil. If it doesnt then lifters are the culprit. I had an E85 and it did the same thing. have you checked to make sure you were full of oil?

Had the same issue with my 94 325is. I changed the oil, but I got thicker oil and just like that no lifter tapping at all!

My 2006 3.0i roadster has been doing it on and off since I purchased it in 2009 with 39,000 miles on it. Now I have 89,000 on it and it still does it from time to time. I've stopped worrying about it and just turn up the radio.

Well .. Hydraulic Lifters need to get "pumped up"
with oil..
The "tapping" you hear is the clearance between the lifter, valve and rocker arms etc
while the lifters are being pumped up with oil ...
More viscous oil would assist in holding the hydraulics fully pumped.
As was explained to me ...
BMW's resistance to replacing exhaust lifters is related to the tapping not really being a sign of pending valve train destruction.

My 2008 z4si had that. Was on and off so I took my iPhone and recorded a video of it in my garage. I think there is a service bulletin out for it but may want to ask. Its was the lifters as noted above. I'm not sure that it was too serious but I had them replace them under warranty anyway. In and out in a day.
