Retrofit pre-lci sport steering wheel to LCI

Hi!

I have the bog standard horrible se steering wheel and I have the opportunity to purchase a 2010/11 sport steering wheel with paddles in stunning condition.

Would this be able to made to work with my LCI 520d?

I do not have sport transmission, my research tells me the physical fitting should be okay, to get the paddles to work I have to code 2TB and that should be it?

Thanks

Good morning,

I'm not sure if you can do that with a steering wheel that has paddles. I think the connector on the new steering wheel is different than the one you have currently on your car with the base steering wheel. I'm not sure how complicated is to retrofit a connector that would be compatible with your new steering wheel, but even then, I think some reprogramming has to be done, if even possible, to make the paddles active. I know for sure that you can retrofit a sport steering wheel (not M sport, non paddles), but you will lose the heating option. I suggest go to you tube and get some additional information there are many good videos. I would reach out to a BMW SA to see if this retrofit is even possible. Ask them that you would like to swap your basic steering wheel for a sport with paddle shifters and how much would it be (don't tell them that you have the steering wheel already).
Please let me know how it went.

P.S My SA quoted the swap for $1,300 USD (parts+ labor) (going from regular to sport with no paddle shifters).

I don't really mind about not having the paddles working, more concerned about the rest of the stuff working.

I don't have heating or vibro motor, or ldw or anything like that. Just radio and cruise controls.

Realoem shows the sport (non m-sport) wheel and airbag both have the same part numbers - whether LCI or non-lci.

It'll be here on Friday, will give it a good scrub down and clean prior to attempting fitting

Where did you buy it from? I was looking on Ebay but most are from Lituania and I'm not very confident to purchase. Did anybody purchase one? Did it arrive?

apples,
please keep me updated how it went. Maybe you can take some step by step pictures on DYI on post them.
Thanks

Yah I will update as I go along, won't be switching until next week.

I got it from UK eBay, guy down in London had it up stupid cheap.

I've bought lots from Lithuania and had no problems, but I think the us airbags are dual stage and the European ones are single? May have to factor this in...Ledermanz are really good If u want a retrimmed wheel

I got a sport wheel w/paddles from Lithuania early this year; Jaunaryish... The transaction was easy-peazy and I got it (IIRC) in about a week.

To answer your original question - yes you can put a pre-LCI steering wheel on LCI F10. That is exactly what I did. I replaced the horrible "standard" steering wheel on my 2014 535 with pre-LCI M-sport one. I posted a thread about it on this forum - was couple years back but if you find it it has some helpful details. I got heating and vibration working, and then got the paddle-shifts coded so they work too (my original steering wheel did not have paddles).

I got that M-sport wheel back then from eBay from the UK and it was great - except that I couldn't use the airbag that came with it cause it's European single stage and didn't work in the US. I had to buy dual-stage one from a dealer here. I still have the single stage sports airbag sitting somewhere in a closet.
