Love/Hate/Change?

Now that I've owned my lovely GT for roughly 4 months, I thought it be interesting to get pulse for my fellow Gran Turismo comrades as to what you love the most of your GT, what don't you like about it? Dislikes and cons? Lastly what you would like to see changed for the 2nd generation of the GT, if there in fact will ever be a 2nd Gen offered.

Here is a quick list off the top of my head of my love and dislikes thus far. So what's yours? Like to hear everyone's opinions and thoughts.

LOVE

1. 7 series leg room w/5 series sedan look and feel, all while offering the trunk/cabin space of the X5.
2. Comfortable and smooth ride yet BMW sport DNA inside and out
3. Rare to see a GT on the road. The few. The Proud. The GT's.
4. Balls to the wall power...on the V8 Twin turbo anyway.
5. An absolute gem and fun vehicle to drive especially on long stretches.
6. Unlike an SUV no need to "step" up, rather low center gravity like sedan and easy in and out of vehicle.
7. HUD
8. DHP
9. Active Steering & Adaptive Cruise Control
10. Comfort Access
11. Beautiful and classy interior.

DISLIKE
1. Poor rear window visibility
2. Rear styling could use a slight revamp design, but think it's unique and well I like but would be interesting to see how they can change the slope perhaps? I am somewhere in the middle of this one.
3. Potential N63 engine reliability.
4. Gas mileage on V8 could be better but tolerable.
5. Reverse lighting not great.
6. iDrive GUI could be better, although much improved from previous version it's still not easy to navigate and operate efficiently.
7. No integrated Apps, limited options.

FUTURE "Wants"
1. Leather/Suede dashboard like it's siblings with similar M-Sport package
2. Major Improvements on I-Drive system especially the GUI.
3. Rear hactch back design for better rear window visibility
4. Implement/unlock all coding feature options.
5. Better windshield/hood slope lines.

iDrive was greatly improved in the LCI so many of your Dislikes and Wants have been addressed. Also, the design of the roofline is the very thing that provides the room you love. Similarily, to make that hatch work and be compliant, I'm sure view is a result.

The only flaw in my mind is the location of the ASS indicator. It's blocked by the wheel and stalk requiring a lean over to see it and in bright sunlight, a shield to see if its illuminated. These are risky moves when pulling up to traffic at a light or intersection. So it's a safety thing. A dashboard indicator would solve it.

Only two things I would like to be different in design:
1. Rear seats fold completely flat..all you need is a lip on the top of the back to keep cargo from hitting the front seats.
2. Would love a lower bumper, aka 3 GT, for easier cargo loading (read: dog)

If the N63 CCP proves to be fix then the vehicle would be the perfect form/function (for us) with those two changes.

What is the LCI? I have a 2013 model. Can I upgrade my iDrive?

The LCI was the Life Cycle something or other. Basically the upgrade 4 years into the 7 year cycle. Come to think of it, the 2013 may have the same iDrive referred to as NBT. Previously it was CIC.

I wish the steering wheel would lift higher when I get out of the car. I like to set the seat pretty high. When I slide in (and am not careful), the steering wheel rubs against the front pocket of my pants leaving an ugly black smear. I've cleaned the wheel with every mild detergent with no luck.

The light indicator on the heated steering wheel is also obscured from vision. I like not having it on the dash but I don't like having it somewhere were I can't see it without ducking my head.

@Ernest, from a BMW Document I found online. (I added the bold type):

"This document is intended to provide initial information on the
BMW 5 Series Lifecycle Impulse (LCI). As such it covers design,
engines, transmissions, equipment levels and Innovations".

I concur with all of king's likes and all the suggested improvements from the other responses.
I have a 2011 and I wish the iDrive display screen was of a different material. My wife's 2013 335xi has what looks like 'gorilla glass' for her screen and I like it as it presents a much clearer picture (when the screen illumination is set properly, dear!) That may be already be used for the later MY GTs.

I just got my 2016 GT.I agree with the likes. It rides great .

Dislikes :

1..they should deliver the car with the rear hatch set in a position that is not fully up. I got a little chip learning how much further this hatch goes up.
2.There is no compass in the dash or in the mirror. My previous X5's had a compass in the mirror and my wives X3 has one that comes up in the dash.
3. When you place a drink or coffee cup in a holder in front you do not have easy access to the memory buttons in the dash or other controls that you would not use voice commands for.
4. not crazy about the rear view mirrors... like the larger ones better..

Likes:
1. double hatch
2. not another F10 on the road
3. huge legroom in the back and adjustable forward/rearward rear seats
4. comfort access if you have that option
5. drives smooth like a 1979 Cadillac El Dorado
6. I just took the F07 on a long road trip last weekend for the first time and used the cruise control and gotta say, it's pretty cool having it appear on the HUD.
Dislikes:
1. wish it was sedan height and sleeker and not a cross between SUV and sedan
2. trunk space, although tall, it's still short. I have to put my stroller sideways
3. nav blows
4. blind spot galore
5. this has nothing to do with BMW but I wish there were more aftermarket mod parts available like the F10

gas tank WAY to small. I'm at the gas station EVERY day

for as big as the car is, the truck is too small. Plenty of room with seats down, but with seats up, can't fit 2 full sized suitcases, or 2 sets of golf cubs (doesn't fit 1 set if there's anything else in the trunk)

needs better exhaust note. it's a twin turbo V8, it should sound like one

BMW has the worst brake material on the planet, brakes are fine, but calipers are "weathered" and in less than a week the rotors were rusting and my car is garaged and it's been dry this year

Better brakes than our Audi with respect to brake dust...hardly any brake dust to speak of. WRTO caliper weathering, not much different from other vehicles we have owned - although I can see your point considering these items are now more visible due to wheel design than from previous generations. I haven't seen/experienced rotor rust on ours unless there was water on the rotor prior to disuse (aka after a wash - even had nearly a one month period of not driving the GT this summer).

The GT is not a sedan. It's the hottest and sportiest SUV on the market. If it were lower or a different shape, it wouldn't have the headspace, rear passenger space and cargo space that it has. Witness the Audi A7.

What is the basis for your comment about the Nav. I think it's arguably the best in it's class.

I love the trunk with it's high flat entry.

The way I was taught to set side view mirrors in High School was wrong. Do a search for how to set your side view mirrors to eliminate blindspots. It will change your life.

ASIDE: The space, shape, visibility are all wrapped up into the GT design. You can't change one aspect without it impacting others. Ultimately the designers balanced them all into what the GT is. MY 2016 is the last one based on the 7 series short. I expect the 2017 to fall short of the interior space we enjoy. YMMV

Hee hee, Ernest! First off, well stated; second your initial statement reminded me of this exchange...

Is there any info as to what BMW will be utilizing as the GT wheel base moving forward?

Setting the side view mirrors per the SAE method clears all blindspots for me. Takes a little work to get used to it but I have better visibility than my old E46 which I couldn't set my driver side mirror far left enough to clear that blind spot.

Their new 'universal' chassis is designed to be able to expand and contract, so it will likely be similar to the other 'five' series vehicles, but likely longer to allow for the expected better space.

Huh? Pardon me as I may just be sleep deprived, but the second half of your answer sounds like, "I'm not fat, I have blubber." It sounds to me as if you are trying to say they have a rigid frame body that can expand and contract. Where do you get this information from? I see no references by googling: 'BMW universal chassis' or 'universal chassis'

Like:

* Very few people know what I'm driving; love it!
* Power=wow!
* They're like dinosaur's droppings in my neck.
* A ton of interior room....especially in the rear & very classy.
* Still averaging 18-19MPG/city and 26-27MPG/highway...no sheet!
* Easy access for all shapes-n-sizes.
* Plenty of trunk space.
* Plenty of trunk recessed storage areas.
* Great frontal visibility.
* Panoramic moon-roof rocks.
* Sport seats are awesome in every aspect!
* Great dash ergonomics
* Good size door pockets.
* Twin trunk access.
* Beefed-up arse end.
* Rear center arm-rest storage is great.
* Awesome Navigation and screen size!
* Steering position has great range!
* Love the storage compartment on dash to the LHS of steering wheel....deep!
* Heat-shield under hood is mediocre at best.
* Side illumination when turning at night.
* Frameless doors are awesome!
* Very good sized seat storage pockets.
* Good illumination on BMW logo door sills.

Dislike:

* Poorly designed center beverage compartement...horrible!
* Small i-Drive knob. Anybody changed this?
* Not a fan of red colored dash and ambient lighting at night.
* Glove compartment a little on the small size.
* Poorly designed GT logo on the rear. I like the logo, but the two letter's placement is poor. I re-positioned mine slightly. Much better!
* Center storage tray, under display screen, is poor [tiny] and near useless.
* No compass.
* Leather is not the best quality. Poor longevity; especially the seats.
* Poor rear visibility....very poor!
* Rear shelf is pointless [does it serve a purpose?] and just a nuisance when trunk is open.
* CD player; really BMW?
* Engine cover/shroud warps over time due to the [notorious] BMW engine heat generation.
* HID heads but not fogs? Really BMW?!?
* Ridiculously small gas tank.
* Dead pedal [foot rest] is overkill in size....eye sore.

Here's a pic of the minor change I did to my GT logo.

I also shifted the "I" after the 550 logo closer as I always thought they were too far apart. I dropped the 550i decal down lower also.

Works for me.

I love that tray. you can't get it on the lesser 5 Series models. Only the GT. It's almost the sole reason I bought the GT. haha

For me, it stores my badge, microfiber cloth for glasses, gel pen, sunglasses and those receipts that are discounts next time you visit a store.

I love that tray too. Gas receipts, chewing gum, chapstick and a couple spare pens in mine. I probably open it a dozen times a day

I can't believe your shades fit in that compartment..... Wow!

No way my Oakley Pit Bull shades would ever fit in that tray and close shut.

Yes. My oakleys don't fit either. They are cheap non polarized so I can see HUD and have cheaters so I can see dash/navi with my old eyes. strictly for driving.

* Panoramic moon-roof rocks.

Forgot about mentioning this. Definitely a highlight of this car.
The center storage is pretty useless but nice regardless. Does anyone else keep their sunglasses in the lower left storage compartment or use it at all?
