Question 335is wastegate rattle?

Hello. I have 2012 335is that now has about 11k miles. I am starting to hear various noises including a rattle or metalic sound of some sort at light throttle at around 2,500 to 3,000 rpm as I am accelerating. I will get it checked out at the first oil service, but I was wondering if these later year N54 motors are subject to the infamous wastegate rattle. I did a search and found nothing conclusive.

It probably is but you'll get used to it. Consider it a feature of your new car! I'm not sure it can ever be perfectly quiet having heard 4 different years and models myself with the same sound. It bothered me at first but waht annoys me the most is the brake sensor squeal!!! Arghhh!!!!

Could it be something else rattling like a heat shield? These have been a source of annoying rattling noises in other cars that I've had.

Your car has not had an oil change yet in 11,000 miles?

Mysterious sounds are a bad thing in a BMW.

Have warranty service for this ASAP - dealer has loaners.

I thought I read somewhere that BMW solved the problem by going from a 6mm shaft to an 8mm for the actuator. Maybe not...

I have not experianced the brake sensor squeal.

It is quite possible.

I know its difficult to accurately diagnose here, but I was more inquiring if BMW has solved the WG rattle problem mechanically. I have read about software changes that help.

Oil change? I am not too concerned as the car is a business lease. I may increase the frequency after the first O.C. if I decide I might want to keep the car.

I used to get the rattles between 2,500 and 3,000 RPMs in my ZO6. It was a pain to diagnose but we identified it as a heat shield in the end.

My 2012 335is w/3k miles was just in the shop BMW Monrovia for 7-working days, conclusion, removed catalytic converters, checked and re-adjusted wastegate, rattle gone.

Cool. You in Glendale too? I am there during the week nights and sometimes Saturday.

My dealer in Escondido said unless it's throwing codes, they won't work on it per the BMW policy. Apparently there are numerous noises from the N54 that have been deemed "normal". hmm. Sounds like I have the wrong dealer. How bad was the sound and were there codes? The noise in mine is noticable but not too bad. Who was your SA at BMW Monrovia?

It's hard to believe that for as long as the N54 has been out, there has not been a permanent fix implemented from the factory. The current wastegate design is just not robust enough. Just this alone, is making me rethink keeping the car long term. Hopefully the adjustment to yours is a permanent fix.

Thanks for the input.

Yes, I'm in Glendale too..
I believe the wastegate correction resolved the problem, there was no codes, just a metallic type sound from the rt side at 2-3k rpm.
Sounds like Escondido BMW is feeding you and others a line of crap...
Talk with Brooke Ranger BMW OF MONROVIA (626) 358-4269, Adrian is their shop foreman very knowledgeable great guy to work with, both are very professional and supportive.
Hope this help!

Do they fix the wastegate problem for free? I feel like this should be a recall.... But BMW would never do that. I have an 07 and mine rattles only when I let off around 2k-3k rpms. I don't think it does it after the oil gets warm though, atleast I can't hear it.

I believe BMW should cover this cost if your are is still in warranty, or check to see if there is a recall for your yr model..

Yup. The noise in mine has the same characterics. Thanks for the response and the contact at BMW of Monrovia.

The 15k mile service was just done to mine and I believe they did a software update as I noticed it running stronger after the service.

For normal road use around here the car is plenty fast enough in stock form. Already pulled over once, but let go....
