Just passed 160 on the 2000 528it.
About to do a massive cooling system overhaul. First one was done by PO about 60K ago. He didn't do the plastic coolant pipes or the heater hoses. I am doing everything. Hope to get another 100 out of it. Transmission is automatic and fluid changed 3 times. Last edited by AV8R4AA; 01-09-2013 at 09:01 AM. |

Well, not that much really. Intake seals, cooling system but only once since 117,000 mi., air/oil separator with timing chain guide rails, and general maintenance. Trans is all original, fluid and filter! I love this car!!

97 528i with 218k
It hasn't been all unicorns and rainbows, but considering my total investment stands at under $5,000 (so far) and the the total time spent wrenching is about 10 hours I feel like I did quite well. The car did FANTASTIC on an 18 hour drive (one way) from Baton Rouge to Orlando for the Capitol One Bowl and it's on long road trips like that when you start to really appreciate your e39 and understand why so many feel so strongly about them.

'98 528i stick. 188k miles, running very strong.
Just did VANOS seals and VCG. Only problem(s).....driver's seat electrics and airbag light on due to coffee dump in to pass' side seal belt receptor! Great car. Probably got 350k+ in her. Three BMW's in this house. 98 528i stick, 99 323i stick and 00 323i auto. gotta love the E39/46 Will look for M5, 545 or 550 stick next. BH |

Very interesting reading... I feel like my e39 has been a bit more of a headache for me than some of your cars. When I bought mine it had just over 125K. It now has just over 133K and I've put new wheels and tires on it, installed a new battery, replaced the front rotors because I thought they were warped, turns out I need new thrust arm bushings at a minimum. The SES light is on because of a P0011 code, a coilpack died, the DSP stereo cuts out while driving and I'm not sure why, the brake light on the dash just came on, and my pass. airbags light intermittently comes on. Ah, the joy of the German car...

Just about to 260,000 and had my alt go bad yesterday. Found a picked replacement for $75 and swapped in 1 hour. Bought the car with 145,000 on it and since replaced nearly all of the suspension, tie rods, radiator, vanos seals, valve cover gasket and light control module. Yes, it's alot of tinkering but come on, I have a beautiful luxury car that's fun to drive and it has cost me less than $3,000 for worn out parts in over 100,000 miles. Did I mention I got the car for $5,500 then shortly after hit a pot hole that nearly totaled the car and insurance paid me $5,700 for repairs? All it needed was new shocks and a door panel, (the air bag blew and wrecked the panel). That's about $.03 a mile and going down by the day!

I've got 63,920 miles on my '03 540i/6. I've had it for 3 years, and I'm averaging around 5k miles per year due to a short commute, and splitting time with another vehicle.
I've got a slight coolant leak somewhere that I'll need to address soon (seems to be coming from under the vehicle), but otherwise it runs great. |

Just picked up a 2002 540ia for 6k from a friend. Came with a bunch of goodies on it... 82,000 miles.
2 hours after I picked it up the upper radiator took a crap. Replaced it and enjoying the ride. Next up is a Mediabridge install.
