I Spy a BMW 2 Series Coupe in Testing Including the M235i

We have seen some photos of the 2 Series Convertible in the past but this time we get to see a bit more of the 2 Series Coupe -- with red paint shining through.



The 2 Series follows in line with BMW's breaking up of their series into more easily recognizable groups (1,3,5,7 - Sedan and 2,4,6,8 Coupe/Convertible). The F22 Coupe and F23 Convertible are looking good for production starting in late 2013 for a 2014 model year launch.



We were also lucky enough to have spies grab some photos of the F22 mentioned above out and about in winter testing. The best part was that the upcoming BMW M235i appears to be along for the ride this time! The wheels are enough to give it away and from what we hear, there is a good chance that the M235i will find it's way to the United States.

Anyone else thinking the 2 Series might be right for them if it comes in at a smaller size -- including some weight saved from the upcoming 4 Series?

Man, what a relief to finally see what I consider a right sized RWD BMW driving machine again.

Should be a worthy successor to the E82.

Can't wait to see what it will look like in ///M guise.

I think the M135i finished in the top 5 in EVO's car of the year. The cars above it were all exotics. Supposed to be a real blast to drive.

I'm not in the market for a coupe unfortunately, so I'm hoping we get a sedan variant.

Just hope this really means a 1 series sedan (RWD) in the US... my F30 is nice but my heavens it's so big!

Small German sedans are about to return to the US. Audi is first this spring. Mercedez will have the A class soon.

VERY interested in this one. I think the F30 is slightly too big. I just hope that the front end is a bit different from the 1 series. The 1 series front end doesn't speak to my eye.

I thought future 1-series in the USA were going to be front wheel drive? 2-series will be rear wheel drive and there should be a four door 2 series like the new four door 6 series, which is an awesome car! But I'm waiting for the 2-series convertible with the fabulous new 4 banger turbo!

It is a bit confusing, but no. Odd numbers = hatchbacks, wagons and sedans and even number = coupes. And by coupe, BMW means it in the original French sense; "cut" or "chopped" which means a coupe can have 4 doors if it has a lower roofline. Conversely, in the 70s it wasn't uncommon to have 2 door sedans (Volvo 240 series comes to mind). The only FWD 1 series variant to be announced is the 1 series GT, but its not in production yet. Its unclear how much this shares with the RWD based 1 series variants other than the name. Rumor is that it is more closely related to a future mini platform for cost sharing purposes. The 1 series GT concept looks to be closest in spirit to Mercedes upcoing FWD CLA.
