Cruise Control Malfunction

Did the search. Went out of town for a meeting yesterday. 3 1/2 hour drive went like normal. Return trip this morning. As soon as I hit the interstate and tried setting the cruise it tried and then came up with the "cruise control malfunction" error. Took an exit, shut it down, restart same error the whole way home. No other errors but not pleased pedaling it the whole way back.

Anyone? 13' X5 Premium, less than 10k miles.

This will not make you feel better one bit. After 3 E70 X5's, a bunch of other BMW's, and way too many hours spent here, I have never, ever heard of a cruise control malfunction. Sorry. Will be interested in what the dealer has to say.

Active or standard cc? Curious to hear the fix.

Do you have any other fault codes? It would seem to me that the problem lies in one of two areas. (1.) The car is not reading your speed properly, and therefore doesn't have the necessary data to tell the ECM to accelerate or decelerate. Or (2.) there is a problem with the ECM or the BUS so that the commands are not being relayed properly to the e-throttle.

I am guessing the car gets the speed info from the same sensors used in the ABS system. So I am guessing you either have bad sensors, a bad connector somewhere, or a bad ECM. All just wild guesses though. Will be very interesting to find out what the dealership says.

Went on errands today and everything worked normal. Weird. She sat in the garage overnight. If it happens again I'll take her in but if not it can wait until the 1 yr mx coming in June. I'm sure if I set out on a cross country trip it will show up again but that's just my luck. I wasn't hallucinating it erred out for 3 hours.

Make a note: Next time snap a photo of the display with your iphone.

The car SHOULD have trapped the error and the dealer should be able to see it. Standard dealer practice, however, is to reset errors and if it doesnt come back report "no problem found". Personally I'd bring it in and force them to document it in a work order, just to get it on record.
