My 2007 335i has chewed through a fair amount of oil for as long as I've owned the car: basically, I get the "low oil" warning about every six-eight weeks. I usually top it off with a quart and away we go, no big deal. (No leaks that anyone can find, just had a full oil and plug change done.)
I got the warning this time around about two days ago, but I still had to drive places, so I didn't get a chance to drop the oil right in. This morning, I started her up and she started *rough*, and then continued idling very rough. I noticed the "service engine soon" light was on, but neither the normal computer or iDrive said anything at all. It was riding so rough I drove her right to the local auto parts place, which is fortunately a third of a mile from me. I picked up two quarts of 10W-30 SAE Syn Valvoline stuff, per the normal recommendation (though I usually do 5W-30, they were out) and dump them in. I have the guy test the code, he said it reported cylinders 1, 2, 3, misfire. Get back in, start her up, she's driving normal. My question is: with brand new spark plugs, is the rough ride/bizarre misfire mishap any chance at all related to the low oil? Or would one not have anything at all to do with the other, and it's just incidental, and the engine coils are going? She never went into limp home mode, but it was about 46 degrees out when I started her, don't know if that might contribute. Any feedback/ideas would be most helpful. 2007 335i with 56,000 miles, new plugs and oil change about 1,500 miles ago. |

Carbon build up in the Intake area
Carbon build up in the Intake area?
Have you ever had the Walnut blasting on the Intake. You need to find out where that oil is going . How many miles between a quart low? Last edited by ctuna; 12-23-2012 at 03:03 PM. |

Symptoms could be a failing ignition coil.
Agree, seems like a lot of oil usage. How many miles between quarts?

The oil consumption reminds me of the oil separator problems of the previous generations. ECS makes note of the the cold issues:

I have 2007 335i... replaced high pressure injector (factory recall: at no cost to me) around 2011. - cold morning rough idle and eventually went to limp mode....
2013 Feb, it's doing it again... |

It sounds like bad injectors to me (I'm a bmw tech).... I'm not lying when I say I've done hundreds of them. These are usually covered under warranty if your car falls under the recall. I would bring it in to the dealer so they can do a key read

I have a 2007 335i and I had the same issues this morning. "Service engine soon" and she is running rough. The dealer told me that it could be condensation which I can avoid by revving her up before I shut it down on cold days. And that it should clear itself up over the weekend. they made no mention of the recall to me.

Just had my injectors and coils replaced under recall due to cold start up vibration and poor engine running in mornings. Was not losing oil though. Maybe bwmoem1 could enlighten us as to why the oil loss if injectors are to blame? From my basic knowledge, oil loss is caused by leaking valve seals, internal head gasket failure/oil burnoff, or external gasket leaks (valve cover, oil housing cover gasket, oil pan gasket). I know this engine has blowby issues but it read it's pretty minimal.

That's a gimongous, festering red carbuncle of a RED FLAG!! You have other problems. Forget an auto parts scan - at their very best, a generic scan yields minimal info. Use THIS or visit a knowledgeable BMW indy ASAP. |
