Service opinion

Service man tells me that I have to clean fuel injectors for a 2012 bmw528I every year and that this is not included in free maintenance program.
Is this true?

No. Run. It is not required.

I find that hard to believe- except that it is a real easy
profit maker for the provider of this "cleaning' service
I try to buy Shell or Chevron gas. I've done some
small amount of research and they seem to
have the best additives. Also add a bottle of
TECHRON to a full tank of gas- and run out this tank
close to empty before refueling. Do this just before each oil change if you
want to feel a bit better about this. Even this is probably overkill.
Do make sure you change your oil after the Techron treatment-
it does get into the oil and dilutes it a bit ( At least this is the
common wisdom about using this product..)

Yeah - ask him if he will rotate your headlights while he's at it.

I actually pay the 4200 every 6 months to get it done... Its been proven by 9 out of 10 BMW dealers that if you stick with it for at least 5 years it will actually help absorb impact in-case of an accident.

Ask them to throw in the blinker fluid change also.

I tried, but it was out of my price range after the navigation flush and rotation, they basically force high pressure water down each road in the system, then rotate the circle 360 degrees

What always gets me is the mandatory (but not covered under the warranty) Service Advisor lube job that is required every 15k miles or 12 months.

That one has never made sense to me.

You have to change the oil in the south? I thought that was only in very cold climates.

I'll run a bottle of Techron through twice a year, and close before an oil change. With my 550xi I have very low miles. I just turned 3,800 and have had it since July. It was mfg in 2/12 and the computer is showing first oil change in 2/13 so I'm going to run some Techron.

Just about every service advisor including BMW has told me to run 1-2 bottles through coming up to oil change. I think one of the best things you can do is a good ole' Italian tune-up. Drive it like you stole it.

This is a scam. BMW covers everything except tires and brakes in their warranty period.

Wow I really feel left out- nobody tried to screw me like that yet. Maybe I need a new cologne.

He didn't try to sell you a muffler bearing lube too??

Changing the tires to winter air IS under warranty, right?

Part I is correct - It's revenue generating abuse of the customer.

Part II is partially correct. Tires are covered by the tire manufacturer's warranty (if any). Brakes (e.g. Pad/disc replacement indicated by iDrive) are covered under http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Conte...intenance.aspx for 4 years / 50K miles.

You are right about the brakes, thanks. Tire warranty is only for defects.
