Head gasket question

Hey all.

1993 525i Automatic

I am about to replace the head gasket and I just have few questions for the ones who know what I am talking about.

1. Is there any DIY way to secure the camshaft before taking out the head? I know there is a special tool for it which is around $130.00 but is there anyway to lock it without a tool? And If I don't lock it will I have a lot of problems setting it up the way it was?

2. I have an automatic, so do I need to lock the flywheel with a pin or is this only for manual transmission cars? Just like for the camshaft there is also a special pin for the fly wheel, do I need it or can I improvise with a screw driver or something?

3. Once I align the timing marks on the sprocket and motor do I need to lock it before taking out the head? I know there is some pin for that as well.

4. Since I am in there, can I flash the engine somehow?

I hope I asked the right questions. Any suggestions which will make this job easier are appreciated!

Thanks!!!!

The cam locking blocks and pin kit can be had for about $90. I have this kit when i did my head refresh.

You could time the motor before removing the head, and yes, there is a flywheel pin for automatics. I wouldnt advise sticking a scredriver in your flywheel though.

The cams have "blocks" at the back, they're squared, and when the motor is at TDC, the flat sides are parrallel to the head at 90 degress so you could put a block of wood or something between them to keep them from turning out of time.

Thanks for your input.

So you are saying that you have the kit for sale? I didn't get that part "]The cam locking blocks and pin kit can be had for about $90." If so than I'll probably get it from you or if you know where I can get one for $90, let me know.
