Y resonator? WTH
Finally actually looked at my 530's exhaust when doing brakes. WTH is up with it?
That Y gimick is huge. No wonder the exhaust is silent. I don't really like the magnaflow system... it's OEM basically. I've had exhaust shops build some decent exhausts on domestic muscle cars. I may have a local shop build me something. But I don't want drone, and I only want a bit of noise. Basically a OEM performance exhaust. My thoughts: pick up new pipe at the two flanges and run it into a Y. then run a thru muffler in the mid section for drone control and put a magnaflow muffler at the end. Keep the pipe size 2.25" or 2.5". Thoughts? I like my quiet hwy car, but a bit of good noise would be nice and not to mention something lighter and more straight thru would be nice.

Thats pretty much exactly what a zillion E39 owners have done. Mega threads on it everywhere, searching will give you lots of results.
BTW the Y resonator is not a "gimmick" its a helmholtz resonator, which is pretty scientifically designed... Sure it weighs a ton but does a very nice job of managing tone. Unfortunately its designed to work with the scuba tanks, i have a scuba tank delete and it sounds great 80% of the time, but does have a mid throttle drone that isnt neighbor friendly...

I"ve been searching... not a lot of custom threads. Lots of muffler swaps. I think a mid muffler and tail muffler would keep the noise and drone down. The reality is I'll never get to an exhaust. I have a million things to do first. pixel repairs, oil leaks... uh.

Ok agree to disagree. I have seen tons of threads here and at BimFo about people doing custom exhaust, some have gone straight pipe, some just muffler, and some found a magnaflow only was too droney so they add resos underneath. Have seen undercar pics of full stainless mandrel fab jobs, cheap pinch bent jobs... Etc etc
