That what it's called wax motor.The same technic is used for many temperature switch activation.The wax is in a bag in the bottom of the piston.And SFbay that's what I said if you read my post.I meant it as more of a statement.The spring is there so the pump will not overcome the valve flap.There are many links to how a tstat works just google.Also BMW doesn't have the only heated tstat ,I have found a few on other makes.No I wouldn't laugh at changing oil every 3k.Some very knowledgable people on other forums have discussed this in detail.Many believe its the oil breakdown from the heat in combination with BMWs 15k oil changes.Did any of you buy your car new and do 3 or 4k oil changes.I would like a seal report from this car.

Just bought my car so I can't tell you.. I too looked up the tstats but didn't know they called it a motor.. don't know why they do, but it's not important.. obviously SF just isn't going to give us this information, so I am done beating on a dead horse.. now we will have to make our own, so if you say they make some that have heating elements in them maybe we should start there.. I was hoping maybe the Alpina's would run cooler tstats but I guess not.. Someone told me the early N62's ran 85c tstats, or 95c, and thats what Paper thinks he has in his car.. the problem is now they are all changed to the new ones when you go to buy one, so we would have to obtain an original one..

The small cooling circuit on this system is surprisingly efficient, I am curious if there would be a way to upgrade that some how.. I think another fan on the condenser would help for stop and go, but nowhere near dropping it more than a couple degrees, so obviously that won't cut it.. Our best bet is to just find a similar thermostat and I will have my machine shop make it work.. I am extremely busy with work and unable to work on this very much, but if you can find one that is a close fit, I'll get it finished, and get them ready to bolt on our cars.

i found an earlier part number that was replaced by current number but.....105c also.

Haven't had time to check but have you found other thermostats that are similar to ours? Meaning they have the rod, etc? If so our heating element should at least fit so it doesn't throw off the DME.

I don't know if it is useful information for you, but I have a September 2002 745i and when driving through town (about 25 mins stop start) I have never seen anything higher than 98 and only saw that once.

Also my car is UK spec.

Just though the information may be of some use if you are hypothesizing that the euro DME may open it sooner or something.

Why havent you considered the tstat in the link paper provided to somehow get the rod out n put it in place of ours

Or get a few Mazda tstats and find which one sf used if you really dont mind

Uk specs have different DME software. Us specs has higher temps bc of prob higher emissions standards or better mpg offered.

Ok so I'm DONE..... I just installed new stact new cooling from BMW (blue).... Check engine light gone!!! I'm not F...king with this any more:-( wast a lot of time and money..... No leak also so no more messing with car, till somebody comes up with a cooler stact that won't set off the check engine and keep the car @95... And my guy that worked in autozone??? GOT FIRER FOR F..ing some girl in the office:-))))

So where was the leak???

I'm hoping it was over flow????:-(( cause two days passed and no leak??? Now I just finished all this work and didn't find any trace of a leak???

Update:

They asking me for 5500$+600$ shipping check....
I guess I need some kind of agreement.

I've change the pan, cooling pipe all gaskets engine and tranny stact. And all new cooling BMW blue cooling. New water pump.new Hoses....

O and I have a new filter to installed this WKEND.

So how's the temp now while idling?? 105-aux fan-103?

I'm going to do a 550i oil cooler retrofit.

I drop lower on HWAY driving. City 103-105. And I hope I don't need to change the REARCOVER OR THE HEATER CORE:-(((

Was it going higher than 105 before?? I mean what was the reason ?
Can you check lower hose temp??
Well if aux fan kicks in it usually means lower hose is at 65C which is good.

Never went over 105, just saw the valley pan leaking so I installed the bimmer pipe kit it comes with everything. Don't know the temp on the lower hose?? But I can hold it not too hot? Fan kicks in @105. Strong fan I can hear it if shut off the radio.

Ok, so what do you guys think:
95C or 90C tstat????

I got original invoice already!!! Everything looks good!!

Was it complicated to install that front seal?? I had issues with URO parts one, spent 4 hrs until it got there!!!!

No very easy. Bimmer pipe has two nuts you Turn one to expand the pipe and the second one the lock them. I just had to go back and open everything up again cause there a notch on the back of the pipe that has to stay pointing up??? Y I don't know. But very easy work. 2hours for everything open and closed.

So you cut old pipe, removed the seal and installed new one that easy?? Did you clean that seal passage well?

I guess your problem was valley pan only, but new pipe is always nice to have!

Yea I cut the pipe out , clean everything... My pipe was still good but I just change everything since I was there.
